Background: To evaluate the safety of resection of anterior mediastinal lesions involving the left innominate vein (LIV) and analyze the risk factors affecting LIV resection safety.

Methods: Patients who underwent anterior mediastinal lesion and LIV resection from January 2010 to December 2018 in the Department of Thoracic Surgery of Tangdu Hospital, Air Force Medical University, were followed up, and preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative factors were analyzed.

Results: Forty-eight patients who underwent anterior mediastinal lesion and LIV resection from January 2010 to December 2018, except for 2 who died of lung infection-induced respiratory failure, were followed up, with an average follow-up time of 32 months (range, 6-72 months). Postoperative: in 31 cases (67.39%), patients did not manifest LIV resection-associated complications; in 15 cases (32.61%), patients manifested mild LIV resection-associated complications; no patient manifested severe LIV resection-associated complications. The average operation time, average blood loss and average hospitalization time were 155.17 min, 324.13 mL and 11.83 days, respectively. Univariate analysis showed that the degree of LIV invasion and surgical approach were risk factors for predicting LIV resection safety.

Conclusions: For anterior mediastinal lesions involving the LIV, LIV resection is a simple, safe and effective surgical procedure.

Division of Spine Surgery, Department of Orthopedic Surgery, Nanjing Drum Tower Hospital, Affiliated Hospital of Medical School, Nanjing University, Nanjing, China.

Purpose: To investigate the impact of preoperative compensatory curve on the postoperative curve progression in congenital scoliosis (CS) patients following thoracolumbar hemivertebra (HV) resection and short fusion.

Methods: This study retrospectively reviewed a consecutive cohort of patients with CS who underwent thoracolumbar HV resection and short fusion with a minimum of 2 years follow-up. According to the preoperative curve pattern, patients were divided into compensatory curve group non-compensatory curve group.

Benign prostatic hyperplasia and prostate cancer are often associated with lower urinary tract symptoms, which can severely affect patient quality of life. To address this challenge, we developed and optimized an injectable compound, prostate ablation and drug delivery agent (PADA), for percutaneous prostate tissue ablation and concurrently delivered therapeutic agents. PADA is an ionic liquid composed of choline and geranic acid mixed with anticancer therapeutics and a contrast agent.

Department of Cardiovascular Surgery, Liv Ankara Hospital, Ankara, Türkiye.

Carotid body tumors are rarely encountered pathologies in the pediatric age group but still exist in the differential diagnosis of cervical painless masses. Genetic and familial background should be studied in addition to contrast imaging studies. Complete subadventitial resection, with or without prior embolization, which is still controversial, is the mainstay of therapy.

Article Synopsis
  • * Major risk factors include chronic viral infections, heavy alcohol use, and genetic predispositions, with many patients diagnosed in advanced stages of the disease.
  • * Treatment approaches vary based on disease stage, and may include liver surgery, ablation, or targeted therapies, often requiring a multidisciplinary approach for management, with combination therapies being common for advanced cases.
