In this article, we report for the first time the presence of the parasite Hepatoxylon trichiuri in specimens of Lepidopus caudatus from the Mediterranean Sea. A total of four plerocercoids were studied using microscopy techniques for both morphological and histological analysis. RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS: We report for the first time for the Mediterranean Sea the presence of the parasite Hepatoxylon trichiuri in specimens of the commercial fish species Lepidopus caudatus. The plerocercoids of H. trichiuri not seems cause observable illness in the fish. However, further studies are needed in order to better assess the incidence and prevalence of the parasite in L. caudatus and other fish species of commercial interest.

The presence of parasites, including Anisakis spp. larvae in fishery products jeopardizes their safety and quality, which is a matter of concern and a challenge for official authorities, as well as for food businesses operators, and a potential health risk to consumers. In the last ten years, a total of 2367 samples from different seafood products, whole fish (n = 1022), fish steaks (n = 417), fish fillets (n = 46), roes (n = 11), canned fish fillets (n = 35), fish fingers (n = 705), and ready-made Japanese dishes (n = 131) were analysed at the Laboratory of Pathology of Aquatic Animals of IPMA.

The metazoan parasites of 403 specimens of the southern ray's bream Brama australis from three localities in southern Chile (Lebu 36° 70' S; 73° 40' W, Calbuco 41° 50' S; 73° 08' W and Punta Arenas 53° 10' S; 70° 50' W) were recorded. More than 23 400 parasite specimens belonging to 12 taxa were registered. Metazoan parasites were dominated by the copepod Hatschekia conifera, constituting 97% of the total number of parasites; the larval cestode Hepatoxylon trichiuri was the second most important parasite (2·1% of the total number of parasites).

Thirteen parasite taxa were identified in the Mediterranean swordfish by morphological and genetic/molecular methods. The comparison of the identified parasite taxa and parasitic infection values observed in the Mediterranean swordfish showed statistically significant differences with respect to those reported for its Atlantic populations. A stepwise Linear Discriminant Analysis of the individual fish examined showed a separation among three groups: one including fish from the Mediterranean Sea (CTS, STS, and IOS); one consisting of fish from the Central South (CS), Eastern Tropical (ET), and Equatorial (TEQ) Atlantic; and a third comprising the fish sampled from the North-West Atlantic (NW); the CN Atlantic sample was more similar to the first group rather than to the other Atlantic ones.
