The aggregation of amyloid-β peptide (Aβ) has been linked to the formation of neuritic plaques, which are pathological hallmarks of Alzheimer's disease. We synthesized peptides containing fluorinated amino acids and studied their effect on the Aβ aggregation. The peptides were based on the sequence LVFFD, in which valine was substituted by either 4,4,4-trifluorovaline or 4-fluoroproline, or the phenylalanine at position 3 was replaced by 3,4,5-trifluorophenylalanine. Our results demonstrate that fluorination of the hydrophobic residue valine or phenylalanine is effective in preventing the Aβ aggregation. This study opens up the possibility of using new sequences based on fluorinated amino acids to inhibit the amyloid-fibril formation.

Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is the most common and aggressive primary brain tumor in adults, characterized by resistance to conventional therapies and poor survival. Ferroptosis, a form of regulated cell death driven by lipid peroxidation, has recently emerged as a promising therapeutic target for GBM treatment. However, there are currently no non-invasive imaging techniques to monitor the engagement of pro-ferroptotic compounds with their respective targets, or to monitor the efficacy of ferroptosis-based therapies.

Isonitrile-derivatized amino acids are emerging as highly effective infrared (IR) probes for investigating the structures and dynamics of hydrogen (H)-bonds. These probes enable the quantification of chemical exchange processes in solute-solvent complexes via two-dimensional IR spectroscopy and hold significant promise for site-specific dynamic studies within proteins. A novel magnetic mesoporous fluorinated metal-organic framework material (FeO@MIP-206-F) has been synthesized specifically for application as an adsorbent for perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids (PFCAs) extraction by magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE). The carefully designed FeO@MIP-206-F material features an appropriate porosity, open metal sites of Zr, and functional groups (fluorine and amino) conducive to the adsorption process. The distinctive architecture of the material endows it with exceptional extraction capabilities for PFCAs.

To clarify the effect of the fluorine atom and piperazine ring on norfloxacin (NOR), NOR degradation products (NOR-DPs, P1-P8) were generated via UV combined with hydrogen peroxide (UV/HO) technology. NOR degradation did not significantly affect cytotoxicity of NOR against BV2, A549, HepG2, and Vero E6 cells. Compared with that of NOR, mutagenicity and median lethal concentration of P1-P8 in fathead minnow were increased, and bioaccumulation factor and oral median lethal dose of P1-P8 in rats were decreased.
