Preparation and application of thionin-bridged graphene-gold nanoparticle nanohybrids.

A universal approach for controllable assembly of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) on chemically reduced graphene oxide (rGO) is presented. AuNPs were conjugated to thionin (TH)-modified rGO through formation of amide bonds. TH has been used as a bridge to link the AuNPs with rGO in this work. The as-prepared AuNP-TH-rGO nanohybrids were characterized by means of transmission electron microscopy (TEM), ultraviolet-visible-near infrared spectroscopy (UV-vis-NIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier Transform infrared (FTIR) and Raman measurements. The experimental results indicate that the particle size and distribution density of AuNPs on the graphene sheets can be well controlled by adjusting the original size and concentration of AuNPs in the reaction mixture. The AuNPs on the surface of graphene were stable under harsh treatment (e.g., acid, alkaline or ultrasonic treatment). Ligand exchange experimental results show that the AuNP-TH-rGO can be easily further functionalized by sulfhydryl-containing ligands. Compared to poly-l-lysine (PLL) coated rGO, PLL coated AuNP-TH-rGO shows higher NIR absorbance and more effective photothermal efficiency.

Cell microencapsulation technologies allow non-autologous implantation of therapeutic cells for sustained drug delivery purposes. The perm-selective membrane of these systems provides resistance to rupture, stablishes the upper molecular weight limit in bidirectional diffusion of molecules, and affects biocompatibility. Thus, despite being a decisive factor to succeed in terms of biosafety and therapeutic efficacy, little progress has been made in its optimization so far.

To achieve effective long-term synergistic treatment of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) with probiotics, we developed a versatile inulin/trans-ferulic acid/silk sericin nanoparticles-nourished probiotic complex. Inulin/TFA/SS nanoparticles were fabricated by inulin, trans-ferulic acid (TFA), and silk sericin (SS), and then loaded onto the surface of poly-l-lysine (PLL) and poly-glutamic acid (PGA)-coated Bifidobacterium longum (BL) to obtain BL@PLL-PGA-Inulin/TFA/SS NPs (BL@PP-NPs). This design simultaneously endowed the complex with excellent gastrointestinal resistance, antioxidant, and anti-inflammation abilities.

Not only do they form blood clots to prevent bleeding after injury, but they also fight infections and maintain vascular integrity during inflammatory diseases. While hemostatic plugs require the collective activation and aggregation of platelets, their role in protecting inflamed blood vessels is performed at the single-cell level.
