Applying Classical Esthetic Principles to Create a Predictable Illusion of Symmetry While Using Digital Technology.

Compend Contin Educ Dent

Private Practice, Scottsdale, Arizona.

Published: April 2020

Having a thorough understanding of classical esthetic principles, including basic tooth shape and form rules, is crucial for clinicians to achieve successful esthetic outcomes, even when implementing digital technologies in their dental offices. The use of advanced, cutting-edge digital tools does not negate the need to adhere to timeless fundamentals of esthetic dentistry. This article reviews key esthetic principles and describes their application in treating a challenging cosmetic case. Showcasing the use of smile design software, the case illustrates the diagnosis, planning, and clinical execution used to mask a congenitally missing lateral incisor while preserving the natural dentition on the contralateral side. The principles of symmetry and harmony are employed to create a smile in which the restorative dentistry would be imperceptible and the remaining dentition protected from structural compromise.

The brain in Spain: The legacy of Santiago Ramón y Cajal.

Neuroscientist

January 2025

Neurology Service, Lille Catholic Institute Hospital Group, (Groupe Hospitalier de l'Institut Catholique de Lille), GHICL, Lomme cedex, France.

The legacy of Santiago Ramón y Cajal, Spain's first Nobel laureate neuroscientist recognized as the founding father of modern neuroscience, is to be preserved in a new museum in Madrid: the National Museum of Natural Sciences (MNCN), one of the most important scientific research institutes in the country sciences in the scope of natural sciences of the Spanish National Research Council. For a boy who dreamed of being an artist but started his career apprenticed to first a barber and then a cobbler, Santiago Ramón y Cajal made a distinguished mark in science. One of Cajal's most important contributions to our understanding of the brain was his discovery of the direction of the information flow within neurons and in neural circuits, which he called the "dynamic polarization law," without a doubt the founding principle of neurosciences.

Background: Anatomically formed healing abutments were suggested in literature to address many of the issues associated with immediate posterior implant insertion such as large extraction sockets that are extremely hard to seal without reflecting the mucoperiosteal flap, extraction sockets anatomy that are not suitable for regular healing abutment placement, and potentially high occlusal stresses when planning a temporary implant supported prothesis to improve the conditioning of supra implant tissue architecture and the emergence profile of the implant supported restorations.

Purpose: To clinically evaluate the peri-implant soft tissue profile of single posterior implant retained restorations and to assess patient related outcomes of the implant restorations that were conditioned immediately by CAD-CAM socket sealing abutments (SSA) versus those conditioned by Titanium (Ti) standard healing abutments (SHA).

Methods: Twenty participants received twenty-two single maxillary immediate implants after flapless minimally invasive tooth extraction and 3D guided implant placement in the posterior area (premolar and molar) and allocated randomly into two groups (n = 11), the intervention group: patients received PEEK SSA and the control group: the patients received Ti SHA.

Biologically-oriented alveolar ridge preservation to correct bone dehiscence at immediate implant placement.

Clin Adv Periodontics

January 2025

Operative Unit of Dentistry, Azienda Unità Sanitaria Locale, Ferrara, Italy.

Background: The purpose of the present case study is to describe the application of a modification of the Biologically-oriented Alveolar Ridge Preservation (BARP) principles in cases of peri-implant bone dehiscence (PIBD) due to a compromised alveolus at immediate implant placement (IIP).

Methods: The technique is based on the stratification of three layers: a deep layer with a collagen sponge (CS) in the apical part of the alveolus (where the buccal bone plate was still present) to support the blood clot; a graft layer to correct the PIBD; and a superficial collagen layer to cover the graft thus providing space and enhancing clot/graft stability. Healing was obtained by primary closure.

The Labiomandibular Fold Anatomy for Comprehensive Lower Facial Rejuvenation: A Micro-Computed Tomography Investigation.

Aesthetic Plast Surg

January 2025

Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Peking Union Medical College Hospital, Peking Union Medical College and Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, No.1, Shuaifuyuan, Dongcheng District, Beijing, China.

Background: Perioral rejuvenation is challenging due to the lack of spatial anatomical understanding of the labiomandibular fold (LMF). The LMF's formation mechanism remains underexplored due to intricate relationships between musculature and subcutaneous structures. This study aimed to clarify the three-dimensional structures of the LMF using micro-computed tomography and histology.

Background: The stability of soft and hard tissues surrounding the implant is not only a matter of aesthetics, but also affects the long-term stability of the implant. The present study was to explore the influence of buccal mucosa width/height (W/H) ratio, emergence profile and buccal bone width on peri-implant soft and hard tissue changes in the posterior region.

Methods: Fifty-eight posterior implant restoration cases were recruited in this study.
