Importance: Long-term data on age-related cataract, a leading cause of blindness and visual impairment, is scarce in Asian populations.
Background: We report the 6-year incidence and progression of age-related cataract and associated risk factors in Malay adults living in Singapore.
Design: Population-based cohort study.
Participants: A total of 3280 Malays aged 40+ years participated in baseline examinations of the Singapore Malay Eye Study (2004-2006). Six years later, 1901 (72.1% of eligible) baseline participants were re-examined.
Methods: Cataract was assessed using lens photos, taken during eye examinations, following the Wisconsin Cataract Grading System.
Main Outcomes And Measures: Incidence and progression of cortical, nuclear and posterior subcapsular (PSC) cataract. Poisson regression models and generalized estimating equations models (with Poisson link) were used to assess factors associated with cataract incidence and progression, respectively, adjusting for age, sex and other risk factors.
Results: Age-adjusted 6-year incidence of cortical, nuclear and PSC cataract was 14.1%, 13.6% and 8.7%, respectively, and was strongly age-related (P for trend <.001 for all types). Diabetes (relative risk [RR], 1.97; 95% confidence intervals [CI], 1.46-2.67) was associated with incident cortical cataract, hypertension was associated with PSC cataract incidence (RR, 2.09; 95% CI, 1.22-3.61), after multivariable adjustment. Progression occurred in 20.4%, 5.9% and 40.6% of baseline cortical, nuclear and PSC cataract cases, respectively.
Conclusions And Relevance: Similar to other elderly populations, incidence and progression of cataract were common in this Malay population. Diabetes and hypertension were important modifiable risk factors for cataract, highlighting the importance of systemic health on eye disease.

A historical perspective of more than one hundred years of influenza surveillance in New York State demonstrates the progression from anecdotes and case counts to next-generation sequencing and electronic database management, greatly improving pandemic preparedness and response. Here, we determined if influenza virologic surveillance at the New York State public health laboratory (NYS PHL) tests sufficient specimen numbers within preferred confidence limits to assess situational awareness and detect novel viruses that pose a pandemic risk. To this end, we analyzed retrospective electronic data on laboratory test results for the influenza seasons 1997-1998 to 2021-2022 according to sample sizes recommended in the Influenza Virologic Surveillance Right Size Roadmap issued by the Association of Public Health Laboratories and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Nasal spray treatments that inhibit the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) entry into nose and nasopharynx at early stages can be an appropriate approach to stop or delay the progression of the disease. We performed a prospective, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-group, multicentric, phase II clinical trial comparing the rate of hospitalization due to COVID-19 infection between azelastine 0.1% nasal spray and placebo nasal spray treatment groups.

Objectives Of The Study: The aim of this study was to assess the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the epidemiology and clinical course of chickenpox in children based on 6 years of self-reported observations.
Material And Methods: The medical records of 350 patients under 18 years of age hospitalised in the Department of Paediatrics, Infectious Diseases, and Hepatology between 1 January 2018 to 31 December 2023 were analysed retrospectively.
Results: During the analysed period, 350 children were hospitalised due to chickenpox, the fewest in the pandemic period, the greatest number in 2023.

In 2020, the in the county of San Diego (COSD) was launched, a private-public joint endeavor between the COSD and the American Liver Foundation. We use epidemic modeling to assess whether the COSD is on track to reach its elimination targets (80% reduction in incidence, 65% reduction in hepatitis C virus (HCV)-related mortality by 2030 compared to 2015) and what intervention scale-up may be required. We adapted a previously developed dynamic, deterministic model of HCV transmission and disease progression among adults in the COSD, stratified by risk, age, gender, and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) status.
