In this paper we report drug delivery systems that are based on phosphonate MOFs. These employ biologically-acceptable metal ions (e.g. Ca and Mg) and several anti-osteoporosis bisphosphonate drugs (etidronate, pamidronate, alendronate and neridronate), as the organic linkers. These materials have been synthesized, structurally characterized, and studied for the self-sacrificial release (by pH-driven dissolution) of the bisphosphonate active ingredient. They exhibit variable release rates and final % release, depending on the actual structure of the metal-bisphosphonate material. Their cytotoxicity profiles match those of the active ingredients.

High-performance Co-based catalysts were derived by pyrolysis using synthesized MOFs as self-sacrificial templates. Various catalytic systems were constructed by peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to degrade tetracycline hydrochloride (TC). Adsorption-degradation efficiencies, cycle performance, dynamics, and the adsorption catalytic mechanism of various catalytic systems for TC were studied.

The development of a highly selective and trace-level gas sensing platform for detecting hydrogen sulfide (HS) remains a formidable challenge. To solve this problem, Co-Mo multimetal oxide semiconductors are rationally tailored by employing metal organic frameworks (MOFs) as self-sacrificial templates. The MOF-derived CoO/β-CoMoO based gas sensors displays high sensitivity (/ = 22) to 10 ppm of HS and ultralow limit of detection (10 ppb HS).

Reasonable design of non-noble metal catalysts with hollow open structure for hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of lignin derivatives to value-added chemicals is of great significance but challenging. Herein, a novel MOF-derived multilayer hollow sphere coated nickel‑tungsten bimetallic catalyst (Ni-WO@CN-700) was fabricated via by confined pyrolysis strategy using bimetallic MOFs as a self-sacrificial template, which exhibits robust activity for the typical model HDO of vanillin to 2-methoxy-4-methylphenol (Yield of 100 % at 140 °C for no less than 10 cycles). The characterizations revealed that WO facilitated the dispersion of Ni nanoparticles and adjusted the acidic capacity of the catalyst through the formed Ni-WO heterojunction.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with special morphologies provide the geometric morphology and composition basis for the construction of platforms with excellent catalytic activity. In this work, cobalt-cerium composite oxide hollow dodecahedrons (Co/Cex-COHDs) with controllable morphology and tunable composition are successfully prepared via a high-temperature pyrolysis strategy using Co/Ce-MOFs as self-sacrificial templates. The construction of the hollow structure can expose a larger surface area to provide abundant active sites and pores to facilitate the diffusion of substances.
