Background: Chronic respiratory diseases constitute a considerable part in the practice of pulmonologists and primary care physicians; spirometry is integral for the diagnosis and monitoring of these diseases, yet remains underutilized. The Air Next spirometer (NuvoAir, Sweden) is a novel ultra-portable device that performs spirometric measurements connected to a smartphone or tablet via Bluetooth®.

Methods: The objective of this study was to assess the accuracy and validity of these measurements by comparing them with the ones obtained with a conventional desktop spirometer. Two hundred subjects were enrolled in the study with various spirometric patterns (50 patients with asthma, 50 with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and 50 with interstitial lung disease) as well as 50 healthy individuals.

Results: For the key spirometric parameters in the interpretation of spirometry, i.e. FEV, FVC, FEV/FVC and FEF, Pearson correlation and Interclass Correlation Coefficient were greater than 0.94, exhibiting perfect concordance between the two spirometers. Similar results were observed in an exploratory analysis of the subgroups of patients. Using Bland-Altman plots we have shown good reproducibility in the measurements between the two devices, with small mean differences for the evaluated spirometric parameters and the majority of measurements being well within the limits of agreement.

Conclusions: Our results support the use of Air Next as a reliable spirometer for the screening and diagnosis of various spirometric patterns in clinical practice.

Comparison of Methods of Eliciting Vital Capacity: Forced Versus Slow Vital Capacity.

J Voice

January 2025

Department of Statistics, Purdue University, Mathematical Sciences Building, 150 N. University Street, Room 231, West Lafayette, IN 47907.

Background: Methods to elicit the vital capacity (VC) include forced vital capacity (FVC) and slow vital capacity (SVC). Because the FVC maneuver can be affected by air trapping or inefficiencies in lung emptying vs. the SVC, the SVC-FVC difference may be substantial and diagnostically meaningful in elderly individuals and patients with respiratory obstruction.

Dr Rajashish Chakrabortty, Associate Professor, Department of Respiratory Medicine, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), Dhaka, Bangladesh; Email:

The standard values of lung function parameters obtained from Western populations do not agree with that of the people of Bangladesh. The study aimed to establish valid and up-to-date spirometry predictive values for the general population in Bangladesh. This cross-sectional observational study was conducted over six months from February 2020 to July 2020 in the Department of Respiratory medicine of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), Bangladesh.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how adults with asthma perceive the usability and acceptability of three integrated devices that monitor indoor air quality, assess asthma symptoms, and measure lung function over a 14-day period.
  • Participants (N=40) used the Awair Omni air quality monitor, ZEPHYRx spirometer, and EMA surveys via a smartphone app, providing feedback on the setup process and device effectiveness through interviews and usability scales.
  • Results showed a diverse participant group with a significant majority being female and educated, and most expressed positive views on the usability of the devices to monitor their asthma-related health in real-time.

Background: Effective detection of early lung disease in cystic fibrosis (CF) is critical to understanding early pathogenesis and evaluating early intervention strategies. We aimed to compare ability of several proposed sensitive functional tools to detect early CF lung disease as defined by CT structural disease in school aged children.

Methods: 50 CF subjects (mean±SD 11.
