The potential energy contained in the controlled mixing of waters with different salt concentrations (i.e., salinity gradient energy) can theoretically provide a substantial fraction of the global electrical demand. One method for generating electricity from salinity gradients is to use electrode-based reactions in electrochemical cells. Here, we examined the relationship between the electrical power densities generated from synthetic NaCl solutions and the crystal structures and morphologies of manganese oxides, which undergo redox reactions coupled to sodium ion uptake and release. Our aim was to make progress toward developing rational frameworks for selecting electrode materials used to harvest salinity gradient energy. We synthesized 12 manganese oxides having different crystal structures and particle sizes and measured the power densities they produced in a concentration flow cell fed with 0.02 and 0.5 M NaCl solutions. Power production varied considerably among the oxides, ranging from no power produced (β-MnO) to 1.18 ± 0.01 W/m (sodium manganese oxide). Power production correlated with the materials' specific capacities, suggesting that cyclic voltammetry may be a simple method to screen possible materials. The highest power densities were achieved with manganese oxides capable of intercalating sodium ions when their potentials were prepoised prior to power production.

Since the widespread use of antibiotics, the residues of antibiotics have frequently been detected in various water sources, making antibiotic pollution an urgent environmental issue. In this paper, one-step green synthetic reduced graphene/manganese nanoparticles (rGO/Mn NPs) composites have been utilized as a novel environmentally-friendly catalyst for tetracycline (TC) removal. The results demonstrated that rGO/Mn NPs exhibit excellent adsorption performance for TC, and can efficiently activate sodium persulfate (PDS) to oxidize and degrade TC.

Fluorescent iron nanoclusters are emerging fluorescent nanomaterials. Herein, we synthesized hemoglobin-coated iron nanoclusters (Hb-Fe NCs) with a significant fluorescence emission peak at 615 nm and investigated the inner-filter effect of fluorescence induced by a manganese dioxide nanosheet (MnO NS). The fluorescence quenching of Hb-Fe NCs by a MnO NS can be significantly reversed by the addition of ascorbic acid.

Recently, the ability of microbial-induced calcium carbonate precipitation (MICP) to remediate heavy metals has been widely explored. was selected to remediate heavy metal-contaminated solution and aged refuse, exploring the feasibility of bioremediation of heavy metals and analyzing the changes in heavy metal forms before and after bioremediation, as well as the mechanism of remediation. The results showed that achieved remediation rates of 95%, 84%, 97%, and 98% for Cd, Pb, Zn, and Cr (III) in contaminated solution, respectively.

Arsenic (As) and antimony (Sb), with analogy structure, belong to VA group in the periodic table and pose a great public concern due to their potential carcinogenicity. The speciation distribution, migration and transformation, enrichment and retention, as well as bioavailability and toxicity of As and Sb are influenced by several environmental processes on mineral surfaces, including adsorption/desorption, coordination/precipitation, and oxidation/reduction. These interfacial reactions are influenced by the crystal facet of minerals with different atomic and electronic structures.

Manganese ions (Mn) are an immune activator that enhances the activation of both cGAS and STING proteins. The STING signaling activation and subsequential immune responses are predominantly associated with endoplasmic reticulum (ER). Therefore, ER targeting of Mn in the subcellular compartments would promote the activation of STING signaling pathways.
