Morphologically complex trace fossils, recording the infaunal activities of bilaterian animals, are common in Phanerozoic successions but rare in the Ediacaran fossil record. Here, we describe a trace fossil assemblage from the lower Dunfee Member of the Deep Spring Formation at Mount Dunfee (Nevada, USA), over 500 m below the Ediacaran-Cambrian boundary. Although millimetric in scale and largely not fabric-disruptive, the Dunfee assemblage includes complex and sediment-penetrative trace fossil morphologies that are characteristic of Cambrian deposits. The Dunfee assemblage records one of the oldest documented instances of sediment-penetrative infaunalization, corroborating previous molecular, ichnologic, and paleoecological data suggesting that crown-group bilaterians and bilaterian-style ecologies were present in late Ediacaran shallow marine ecosystems. Moreover, Dunfee trace fossils co-occur with classic upper Ediacaran tubular body fossils in multiple horizons, indicating that Ediacaran infauna and epifauna coexisted and likely formed stable ecosystems.

In this study, we attempt to illustrate fossil vertebrate dental tissue geochemistry and, by inference, its extent of diagenetic alteration, using quantitative, semi-quantitative and optical tools to evaluate bioapatite preservation. We present visual comparisons of elemental compositions in fish and plesiosaur dental remains ranging in age from Silurian to Cretaceous, based on a combination of micro-scale optical cathodoluminescence (CL) observations (optical images and scanning electron microscope) with minor, trace and rare earth element (REE) compositions (EDS, maps and REE profiles), as a tool for assessing diagenetic processes and biomineral preservation during fossilization of vertebrate dental apatite. Tissue-selective REE values have been obtained using laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS), indicating areas of potential REE enrichment, combined with cathodoluminescence (CL) analysis.

The Great Rann of Kachchh is a sabkha terrain with a thick succession of Quaternary to Late Holocene sediments, deposited during high sea level after the Last Glacial Maxima. Geomorphologically, the Great Rann of Kachchh is subdivided into Bet Zone, Linear Trench Zone, Great Barren Zone, and Banni Plain. The Bet zone is a slightly elevated flat surface comprising a complex network of bets and interbet channels-the geomorphic entities developed as complex interplay of sea level and coseismic tectonic activity during the Holocene.

Enantiornithes are the most successful early-diverging avian clade, their fossils revealing important information regarding the structure of Cretaceous avifaunas and the parallel refinement of flight alongside the ornithuromorph lineage that includes modern birds. The most diverse recognized family of Early Cretaceous enantiornithines is the Bohaiornithidae, known from the Jehol Biota in northeastern China. Members of this clade enhance our understanding of intraclade morphological diversity and elucidate the independent evolution of this unique lineage.

The Cambrian explosion was a time of groundbreaking ecological shifts related to the establishment of the Phanerozoic biosphere. Trace fossils, which are the products of animals interacting with their substrates, provide a key record of the diversification of the benthos and the evolution of behavioral complexity through this interval. The Chapel Island Formation of Newfoundland in Canada hosts the most extensive trace-fossil record from the latest Ediacaran to Cambrian Age 2, spanning about 20 million years continuously.
