We report and demonstrate for the first time a method to compensate atmospheric group velocity dispersion of terahertz pulses. In ultra-wideband or impulse radio terahertz wireless communication, the atmosphere reshapes terahertz pulses via group velocity dispersion, a result of the frequency-dependent refractivity of air. Without correction, this can significantly degrade the achievable data transmission rate. We present a method for compensating the atmospheric dispersion of terahertz pulses using a cohort of stratified media reflectors. Using this method, we compensated group velocity dispersion in the 0.2-0.3 THz channel under common atmospheric conditions. Based on analytic and numerical simulations, the method can exhibit an in-band power efficiency of greater than 98% and dispersion compensation up to 99% of ideal. Simulations were validated by experimental measurements.

Collective modes in terahertz field response of disordered superconductors.

J Phys Condens Matter

We consider a problem of nonlinear response to an external electromagnetic radiation in conventional disordered superconductors which contain a small amount of weak magnetic impurities. We focus on the diffusive limit and use Usadel equation to analyze the excitation energy and dispersion relation of the collective modes. We determine the resonant frequency and dispersion of both amplitude (Schmidt-Higgs) and phase (Carlson-Goldman) modes for moderate strength of magnetic scattering.

Phononic modulation of spin-lattice relaxation in molecular qubit frameworks.

Nat Commun

Department of Chemistry, School of Science and Research Center for Industries of the Future, Westlake University, Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, China.

The solid-state integration of molecular electron spin qubits could promote the advancement of molecular quantum information science. With highly ordered structures and rational designability, microporous framework materials offer ideal matrices to host qubits. They exhibit tunable phonon dispersion relations and spin distributions, enabling optimization of essential qubit properties including the spin-lattice relaxation time (T) and decoherence time.

Holographically designed aperiodic lattices (ALs) have proven to be an exciting engineering technique for achieving electrically switchable single- or multi-frequency emissions in terahertz (THz) semiconductor lasers. Here, we employ the nonlinear transfer matrix modeling method to investigate multi-wavelength nonlinear (sum- or difference-) frequency generation within an integrated THz (idler) laser cavity that also supports optical (pump and signal) waves. The laser cavity includes an aperiodic lattice, which engineers the idler photon lifetimes and effective refractive indices.

The paper presents a thorough investigation into the design of a Modified Core Hexa-Deca Photonic Crystal Fiber (MHD-PCF) with adjustable features to regulate dispersion and birefringence. At the target wavelength of 1550 nm, the suggested MHD-PCF exhibits extraordinary optical properties, including an ultra-high negative dispersion coefficient of - 7755 ps/(nm km) and significant birefringence of 1.905 × 10.

Highly oriented beam steering will enhance power density and field of view (FOV) in terahertz wireless links. Metasurface can be constructed by deliberate arrangement of subwavelength meta-cells to manipulate the wavefront. This paper explores a dispersive metasurface with a specific phase gradient patterned in a 2-inch aperture, allowing for collimated beamforming and two-dimensional (2D) beam steering by a combination of frequency tuning and metasurface rotation.
