The 2011 spill at platforms B and C of the Penglai 19-3 oil field in the Bohai Sea has been the worst oil spill accident in China. To assess long-term effects, a comprehensive monitoring program of chemical and biological variables (within a 2.2 km radius of the spill site) was conducted five years after the spill. Comparison of nutrient, Chl-a and oil concentrations in seawater, TOC, PAHs, heavy metals concentrations within the sediments, and the abundance and biomass of macrobenthic organisms to values obtained before and after the oil spill in previous studies indicate habitat recovery has occurred within the Bohai Sea following the episodic oil release. Observed elevated oil concentration in the water column and higher concentrations of two heavy metals, five PAHs, TOC, TOC/TN and lower values of δC, together with a reduction in macrobenthic biomass in near-field samples, suggest the influence of contaminants from chronic releases of oil and operational waste discharges within the vicinity of the oil platforms.

Two new cembrane-derived tricyclic diterpenes belonging to the sarcophytin family, namely 4-hydroxy-chatancin () and sarcotoroid (), together with two known related ones ( and ), were isolated from the soft coral collected off Ximao Island in the South China Sea. The structures of the new compounds were elucidated by extensive spectroscopic analysis, a quantum mechanical nuclear magnetic resonance (QM-NMR) method, a time-dependent density functional theory electronic circular dichroism (TDDFT-ECD) calculation, X-ray diffraction analysis, and comparison with the reported data in the literature. A plausible biosynthetic pathway of compounds - was proposed, involving undergoing a transannular Diels-Alder cycloaddition.

Dimethyl sulfide (DMS) and dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP) are important sulfur compounds influenced by community assemblages of plankton. The distributions of DMS, DMSP, DMSP lyase activity (DLA), DMSP-consuming bacteria (DCB), and community structures of phytoplankton and zooplankton were investigated during summer in the Bohai Sea and Yellow Sea. The variety ranges of DMS, dissolved DMSP (DMSP), and particulate DMSP (DMSP) concentrations in the surface seawater were 1.

The Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (Jing-Jin-Ji) Region is home to the most acute economic, resource, and environmental conflicts in the Bohai Sea region, and the rivers entering the sea carry abundant total nitrogen (TN) input into the Bohai Bay, which is the main land-based input causing eutrophication of the bay. The Haihe River Basin in the Jing-Jin-Ji Region was divided into 112 (2018-2019) and 187 (2020-2022) control units, and the spatial and temporal variations in TN concentration in the surface water of the Haihe River Basin in the Jing-Jin-Ji Region were systematically analyzed from 2018 to 2022 by combining the Euclidean distance analysis method and the K-means clustering analysis method. The results showed that the annual average concentration of TN in the region showed a trend of decreasing (2018-2020) and then increasing (2021-2022), in which the concentration of TN increased significantly from June 2021 to June 2022.

The Bohai Sea (BS) is a semi-enclosed inland sea and China's most polluted coastal sea. With the rapid economic development of the circum-Bohai Sea region, large amounts of pollutants have been discharged into the BS, posing a significant threat to human health and the ecosystem. Great efforts have been made on investigating the levels of various pollutants in the BS; however, the priority pollutants which are required for the implementation of suitable environmental management and remediation measures in this system remain unclear.

Revealing the composition and optical properties of marine carbonaceous aerosols: A case of the eastern China marginal seas.

Marine aerosols are major components of atmospheric aerosols, playing substantial roles in influencing the regional and global environment and climate. Marine aerosols are not only produced by seawater directly, but also by indirect processes such as atmospheric oxidation of marine bioactive gases as well as terrestrial transport. Over the Eastern China Marginal Seas (ECMS), marine aerosols are strongly affected by marine emission and transport of terrestrial aerosols.
