Objectives: As a global pandemic is inevitable, real-time monitoring of transmission is vital for containing the spread of COVID-19. The main objective of this study was to report the real-time effective reproduction numbers (R(t)) and case fatality rates (CFR) in Europe.

Methods: Data for this study were obtained mainly from the World Health Organization website, up to March 9, 2020. R(t) were estimated by exponential growth rate (EG) and time-dependent (TD) methods. 'R0' package in R was employed to estimate R(t) by fitting the existing epidemic curve. Both the naïve CFR (nCFR) and adjusted CFR (aCFR) were estimated.

Results: With the EG method, R(t) was 3.27 (95% confidence interval (CI) 3.17-3.38) for Italy, 6.32 (95% CI 5.72-6.99) for France, 6.07 (95% CI 5.51-6.69) for Germany, and 5.08 (95% CI 4.51-5.74) for Spain. With the TD method, the R value for March 9 was 3.10 (95% CI 2.21-4.11) for Italy, 6.56 (95% CI 2.04-12.26) for France, 4.43 (95% CI 1.83-7.92) for Germany, and 3.95 (95% CI 0-10.19) for Spain.

Conclusions: This study provides important findings on the early outbreak of COVID-19 in Europe. Due to the recent rapid increase in new cases of COVID-19, real-time monitoring of the transmissibility and mortality in Spain and France is a priority.

Introduction: Molecular surveillance is an important tool for detecting chains of transmission and controlling the HIV epidemic. This can also improve our knowledge of molecular and epidemiological factors for the optimization of prevention. Our objective was to illustrate this by studying the molecular and epidemiological evolution of the cluster including the new circulating recombinant form (CRF) 94_cpx of HIV-1, detected in 2017 and targeted by preventive actions in 2018.

In the field of Structural Health Monitoring (SHM), complete datasets are fundamental for modal identification analysis and risk prediction. However, data loss due to sensor failures, transmission interruptions, or hardware issues is a common problem. To address this challenge, this study develops a method combining Variational Mode Decomposition (VMD) and Sparrow Search Algorithm (SSA)-optimized Gate Recurrent Unit (GRU) for recovering structural response data.

High-Conductivity, Self-Healing, and Adhesive Ionic Hydrogels for Health Monitoring and Human-Machine Interactions Under Extreme Cold Conditions.

Adv Sci (Weinh)

January 2025

Ionic conductive hydrogels (ICHs) are emerging as key materials for advanced human-machine interactions and health monitoring systems due to their unique combination of flexibility, biocompatibility, and electrical conductivity. However, a major challenge remains in developing ICHs that simultaneously exhibit high ionic conductivity, self-healing, and strong adhesion, particularly under extreme low-temperature conditions. In this study, a novel ICH composed of sulfobetaine methacrylate, methacrylic acid, TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibers, sodium alginate, and lithium chloride is presented.

Background: The unique characteristics of air pollution in high-altitude regions may significantly influence the transmission and incidence of influenza. However, current research on this phenomenon is limited, and further investigation is urgently needed.

Methods: This study collected influenza outpatient data from Qinghai Province between January 1, 2016, and December 31, 2021.

A symmetrical dual-D and dual-core single-mode fiber surface plasmon resonance (SPR) liquid sensor is designed for biological detection. The dual-core design optimizes the transmission path, improves the momentum matching between free electrons and photons, and facilitates bidirectional coupling, consequently amplifying the SPR effect and enabling sensitive monitoring of the refractive index changes of biological solutions. In this structure, a gold wire is placed in the middle of the polished surface of the double-D-shaped single-mode fiber (SMF) to produce high-quality free electrons and promote the mode-coupling excitation of the SPR effect.
