The Dermaptera (earwigs) have the most complex folding system of the posterior wing among insects. We provide an illustrated guide describing how to stretch a dermapteran hind wing and mount it on slides in Hoyer's medium.

Distribution areas, in terms of size and shape, are usually related to dispersal capacity, and the latter is partly related to flight capacity in insects. Thus, wing condition (brachypterous or macropterous) is expected to correlate with the area size of the species distribution range. Here, we studied this aspect for the first time in Passalidae, a subsocial group of saproxylophagous beetles.

To date, five species of reddish-brown have been described, but their highly similar body color and other phenotypic traits make accurate taxonomy challenging. To clarify species-level taxonomy and validate potential new species, the cytochrome oxidase subunit I () was used for phylogenetic analysis and the geometric morphometrics of elytron, pronotum, and hind wing were employed to distinguish all reddish-brown species. Phylogenetic results using maximum likelihood and Bayesian analyses of sequences aligned well with the current taxonomy of the species group.
