Leptospirosis has been rarely reported in the United States and has been historically related to occupational exposure to infected animals, and contaminated environments. Over the past decade, there are indications that at-risk populations may be changing in the United States, to also include participants in freshwater sports and occasionally individuals living in economically disadvantaged urban inner- city environments. We present a case of Weil`s disease in a 39-year-old homeless man who had been released from prison two weeks prior and denied direct contact with infected animals or contaminated fresh water. Prison inmates and homeless patients are potentially at high risk of rat exposure and infection with . A high index of suspicion is needed for diagnosis of leptospirosis in the absence of traditional risk factors. To our knowledge, this is the first case of leptospirosis associated with homelessness and incarceration in the United States. A literature review on leptospirosis cases in Florida over the past 60 years was performed.

Double bond (C═C) position isomerism in unsaturated lipids can indicate abnormal lipid metabolism and pathological conditions. Novel chemical derivatization and mass spectrometry-based techniques are under continuing development to provide more accurate elucidation of lipid structure in finer structural detail. Here, we introduce a new ion chemistry for annotating lipid C═C positions, which is highly efficient for liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry-based lipidomics.

Heritable fragile bone disorders (FBDs), ranging from multifactorial to rare monogenic conditions, are characterized by an elevated fracture risk. Validating causative genes and understanding their mechanisms remain challenging. We assessed a semi-high throughput zebrafish screening platform for rapid in vivo functional testing of candidate FBD genes.

Continuous Near-Bed Movements of Microplastics in Open Channel Flows: Statistical Analysis.

Environ Sci Technol

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta T6G 1H9, Canada.

The ubiquitous distribution of microplastics (MPs) in aquatic environments is linked to their transport in rivers and streams. However, the specific mechanism of bedload microplastic (MP) transport, notably their stochastic behaviors, remains an underexplored area. To investigate this, particle tracking velocimetry was employed to examine the continuous near-bed movements of four types of MPs under nine setups with different experimental conditions in a laboratory flume, with an emphasis on their streamwise transport.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a globally recognized neurodevelopmental condition characterized by repetitive and restrictive behavior, persistent deficits in social interaction and communication, mental disturbances, etc., affecting approximately 1 in 100 children worldwide. A combination of genetic and environmental factors is involved in the etiopathogenesis of the disease, but specific biomarkers have not yet been identified.

A case for broadening our view of mechanism in developmental biology.

Department of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology, Museum of Comparative Zoology, Harvard University, Cambridge, MA 02138, USA.

Developmental biologists can perform studies that describe a phenomenon (descriptive work) and/or explain how the phenomenon works (mechanistic work). There is a prevalent perception that molecular/genetic explanations achieved via perturbations of gene function are the primary means of advancing mechanistic knowledge. We believe this to be a limited perspective, one that does not effectively represent the breadth of work in our field.
