We created a clinical ultrasound (CUS) elective in clerkship, which gave medical students the opportunity to enhance their knowledge and technical skills while refining their CUS-related clinical decision making. This elective uniquely allowed medical students to integrate their CUS knowledge and skills into real patient care within the clinical environment (discipline) of their choice. As such, beyond supporting increasing technical competence, students learned to advocate for appropriate use of CUS, an important skill for trainees to develop.

Background: With increasing patient care responsibilities, administrative work and education demands, physicians may find it challenging to provide high-quality and engaging clinical education to third-year medical students on clerkships. Fourth-year students in the role of near-peer teachers can help fill this role, but they often also have competing responsibilities.
Approach: A 4-week Internal Medicine Student Chief (Student Chief) elective was created, designed such that fourth-year students would apply for dedicated time to serve as student leaders, coaches and educators for the third-year students on the Internal Medicine clerkship.

Medical education is at a point of transition in which it must reform to meet the demand of healthcare providers competent in ultrasonography. This article recommends the pre-clerkship elective infrastructure as a method for medical schools to begin prototyping content and modes of delivering ultrasound education. Doing so will prepare medical students earlier in their careers to use and build upon their knowledge of ultrasound during clerkships and as residents.

Objective Emergency Medicine (EM) clerkships often use a written exam to assess the knowledge gained over the course of an EM rotation in medical school. Clerkship Directors (CDs) may choose the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME) EM Advanced Clinical Science Subject Exam (ACE), the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine (SAEM) M4 exam, which has two versions, the SAEM M3 exam, or departmental exams.
