Amino-containing tannic acid derivative-mediated universal coatings for multifunctional surface modification.

The development of a universal coating strategy for the construction of functional surfaces and modulation of surface properties is of great research interest. Tannic acid (TA) could serve as a sole precursor for the deposition of colorless coatings on substrate surfaces. However, the deposition of TA requires a high salt concentration (0.6 M), which may limit its practical application. Herein, primary amine moieties were introduced on the gallic acid groups in TA. The resultant amine-containing TA derivative (TAA) can self-polymerize under mild conditions (10 mM, Tris buffer), and form uniform and colorless coatings in a material-independent manner. In comparison with the TA coating under the same preparation conditions, the TAA coating exhibits an increased thickness as measured by ellipsometry. The TAA coating is adapted for secondary surface functionalization. The hydrophilic mPEG brushes can be grafted on the TAA coating to inhibit non-specific protein adsorption. A biotin probe can be immobilized on the TAA coating to promote specific binding with avidin. In addition, the TAA coating can be utilized for in situ reduction of silver ions to AgNPs. The resulting AgNP-loaded TAA coating can inhibit bacterial adhesion and prevent biofilm formation.

Kinnow mandarin is an important citrus fruit that undergoes various postharvest qualitative losses. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the effect of polysaccharide-based xanthan gum (XG) coatings and lemongrass essential oil (LG) on the nutritive quality of Kinnow mandarins stored at 5-7 °C, 90-95 % RH for 75 days. The results revealed that in comparison to control the coatings maintained the fruit titratable acidity (TA), soluble solid content (SSC), ascorbic acid (AsA) content, total flavonoid content (TFC), and juice content, along with reduced weight loss and spoilage incidence.

Bacteria-based cancer therapy employs various strategies to combat tumors, one of which is delivering tumor-associated antigen (TAA) to generate specific immunity. Here, we utilized a poly-arginine extended HPV E7 antigen (9RE7) for attachment on Salmonella SL7207 outer membrane to synthesize the bacterial vaccine Salmonella-9RE7 (Sal-9RE7), which yielded a significant improvement in the amount of antigen presentation compared to the previous lysine-extended antigen coating strategy. In TC-1 tumor mouse models, Sal-9RE7 monotherapy decreased tumor growth by inducing E7 antigen-specific immunity.

Unlabelled: The quality characteristics of pineapple slices coated with emulsions enriched with pomegranate seed oil (PSO) and grape seed oil (GSO) by electrospray coating (ESC) and dip-coating (DC) methods were investigated.
