In a recent issue of Cell Chemical Biology, Gray et al. (2020) report an aptamer-based method to reversibly label and isolate EGF receptor-expressing cells from heterogeneous mixtures by cell sorting approaches. Subsequent treatment using complementary oligonucleotides restores full functionality of EGF receptors, highlighting the superiority of this method to antibody-based sorting.

Glioblastoma (GBM) remains one of the most aggressive and treatment-resistant brain malignancies in adults. Standard approaches, including surgical resection followed by adjuvant radio- and chemotherapy with temozolomide, provide only transient control, as GBM frequently recurs due to its infiltrative nature and the presence of therapy-resistant subpopulations such as glioma stem cells (GSCs). GSCs, with their quiescent state and robust resistance mechanisms, evade conventional therapies, contributing significantly to relapse.

In the existing development of extensive drug screening models, 3D cell cultures outshine conventional 2D monolayer cells by closely imitating the in vivo tumor microenvironment. This makes 3D culture a more physiologically relevant and convenient system in the regime of preclinical drug testing. In the nanomedicinal world, nanoconjugates as nanocarriers are largely hunted due to their capability of precisely binding to target cells and distributing essential dosages of therapeutic drugs with enhanced safety profiles.

Growth plate cartilage (GP) serves as a dynamic site of active mineralization and offers a unique opportunity to investigate the cell-regulated matrix mineralization process. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) provides a means for the direct observation of these mechanisms, offering the necessary resolution and chemical analysis capabilities.
