Fibrin is an optimal scaffold for tissue-engineering applications because it mimics the extracellular matrix. Despite this interesting feature, fibrin gel owns only poor mechanical properties that limit its applications. Different approaches have been used for fibrin electrospinning, however all the methods investigated required washing steps, cross-linking agent treatment or immersion. The aim of this work was to produce a bilayered fibrin/polyurethane scaffold by combination of the electrospun method and the spray, phase-inversion method for the preparation of a fibrin nanostructured layer to be attached onto a poly(ether)urethane microporous support layer. The synthetic layer was obtained by the spray, phase-inversion technique onto a rotating metallic collector, while fibrinogen was processed to obtain a nanofibrous structure by electrospinning. Finally, fibrin polymerization was obtained by thrombin solution spraying onto the electrospun nanofibers. SEM analysis showed the formation of filamentous structure with diameter in the range of μm attached onto the synthetic layer. This scaffold could be applied in soft tissue regeneration such as wound healing or as drug delivery system.

Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) membranes with highly hydrophilic and antifouling properties are desirable for oily wastewater treatment. Herein, we report (1) a strategy of bulk modification of PVDF by integration of PVDF and a particle-based double-network (PDN) hydrogel, poly-2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonate/polyacrylamide (PAMPS/PAAm), via a strong PDN and PVDF interpenetrating polymer network (PDN-PVDF IPN) to obtain a PVDF/PDN solution and (2) the subsequent casting of it into a microfiltration membrane via spray-assisted non-solvent-induced phase separation (SANIPS). The IPN structure modulates the surface segregation behavior of the highly hydrophilic and robust PDN hydrogel in the process of SANIPS, endowing the resulting PVDF/PDN membrane with excellent bulk mechanical properties and much enhanced wettability and thereby high oil/water emulsion separation efficiency and antifouling performance.

Cationic Amphiphilic Comb-Shaped Polymer Emulsifier for Fabricating Avermectin Nanoemulsion with Exceptional Leaf Behaviors and Multidimensional Controlled Release.

ACS Appl Mater Interfaces

The development of intelligent multifunctional nanopesticides featuring enhanced foliage affinity and hierarchical target release is increasingly pivotal in modern agriculture. In this study, a novel cationic amphiphilic comb-shaped polymer, termed PEI-TA, was prepared via a one-step Michael addition between low-molecular-weight biodegradable polyethylenimine (PEI) and tetradecyl acrylate (TA), followed by neutralization with acetic acid. Using the emulsifier PEI-TA, a positively charged avermectin (AVM) nanoemulsion was prepared via a phase inversion emulsification process.

Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) porous membrane was prepared by a two-step method of surface gelation-immersion precipitation phase inversion. Chitosan/acetic acid solution and glutaraldehyde aqueous solution were sequentially sprayed onto the surface of the PVDF solution film, with chitosan crosslinking and gelation occurring simultaneously on the film surface. The solution film was then immersed in a coagulation bath to obtain a modified PVDF porous membrane.

Synthesis and shaping of metal-organic frameworks: a review.

Chem Commun (Camb)

October 2022

State Key Laboratory of Safety and Control for Chemicals, SINOPEC Research Institute of Safety Engineering Co., Ltd., Qingdao City, Shandong Province, China.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) possess excellent advantages, such as high porosity, large specific surface area, and an adjustable structure, showing good potential for applications in gas adsorption and separation, catalysis, conductivity, sensing, magnetism, However, they still suffer from significant limitations in terms of the scale-up synthesis and shaping, hindering the realization of large-scale commercial applications. Despite some attempts having been devoted to addressing this, challenges remain. In this paper, we outline the advantages and drawbacks of existing synthetic routes such as electrochemistry, microwave, ultrasonic radiation, green solvent reflux, room temperature stirring, steam-assisted transformation, mechanochemistry, and fluid chemistry in terms of scale-up production.

The objective of this study was to develop clarithromycin-loaded lipid nanocarriers and incorporate them into microcapsules for pH-specific localized release of clarithromycin in the Helicobacter pylori microenvironment in order to obtain a gastro-retentive and pH-sensitive formulation. A Plackett-Burman design was applied to identify the effect of 5 factors on 3 responses. Then, a central composite design was applied to estimate the most important factors leading to the best compromise between lower particle size, polydispersity index and particle size changes.
