Homoleptic Group 4 metal carbonyl cation and neutral complexes were prepared in the gas phase and/or in solid neon matrix. Infrared spectroscopy studies reveal that both zirconium and hafnium form eight-coordinate carbonyl neutral and cation complexes. In contrast, titanium forms only the six-coordinate Ti(CO) and seven-coordinate Ti(CO) . Titanium octacarbonyl Ti(CO) is unstable as a result of steric repulsion between the CO ligands. The 20-electron Zr(CO) and Hf(CO) complexes represent the first experimentally observed homoleptic octacarbonyl neutral complexes of transition metals. The molecules still fulfill the 18-electron rule, because one doubly occupied valence orbital does not mix with any of the metal valence atomic orbitals. Zr(CO) and Hf(CO) are stable against the loss of one CO because the CO ligands encounter less steric repulsion than Zr(CO) and Hf(CO) . The heptacarbonyl complexes have shorter metal-CO bonds than that of the octacarbonyl complexes due to stronger electrostatic and covalent bonding, but the significantly smaller repulsive Pauli term makes the octacarbonyl complexes stable.

The structural and magnetic properties of nanostructured Co-rich transition-metal alloys, Co(100-x)TMx (TM = Hf, Zr and 10 ≤ x ≤ 18), were investigated. The alloys were prepared under non-equilibrium conditions using cluster-deposition and/or melt-spinning methods. The high-anisotropy HfCo7 and Zr2Co11 structures were formed for a rather broad composition region as compared to the equilibrium bulk phase diagrams, and exhibit high Curie temperatures of above 750 K.

The phosphinoamide-linked Co/Hf complexes ICo(Ph(2)PN(i)Pr)(3)HfCl (4), ICo((i)Pr(2)PNMes)(3)HfCl (5), and ICo((i)Pr(2)PN(i)Pr)(3)HfCl (6) have been synthesized from the corresponding tris(phosphinoamide)HfCl complexes (1-3) for comparison with the recently reported tris(phosphinoamide) Co/Zr complexes. Very minor structural and electronic differences between the Zr and Hf complexes were found when the N-(i)Pr-substituted phosphinoamide ligands [Ph(2)PN(i)Pr](-) and [(i)Pr(2)PN(i)Pr](-) were utilized. The reduction products [(THF)(4)Na-{N(2)-Co(Ph(2)PN(i)Pr)(3)HfCl}(2)]Na(THF)(6) (7) and N(2)-Co((i)Pr(2)PN(i)Pr)(3)Hf (9) are also remarkably similar to the corresponding Zr/Co analogues.
