This study examines the alterations in scalp recorded cortical activity due to surgical incision in anaesthetized cardiac patients using electroencephalogram (EEG) patterns. The primary aim was to compare the changes in electrocortical activity after surgical incision. The secondary aim was to compare the changes in time, frequency, and wavelet domain parameters after loss of consciousness (LoC) and after intubation. Real-time EEG data were recorded from 19 patients undergoing cardiac surgery and signals were quantified with time, frequency, and wavelet domain parameters. An increase in hjorth activity, hjorth complexity, rms value, total band power, relative delta band power, standard deviation and maxima of approximation coefficients ( ), minima of detail coefficients ( , , and ) and decrease in hjorth mobility; approximate entropy; relative theta, alpha, and beta band power; specentropy; median, spectral edge, and mean frequency; mean of detail coefficients ( ); standard deviation of detail coefficients ( , , and ); maxima of detail coefficients ( ); and minima of approximation coefficients ( ) were observed during LoC. Decrease in hjorth activity; hjorth mobility; rms value; total band power; relative theta band power; median frequency; standard deviation of coefficients ( , , , and ); and maxima of coefficients ( , , , and ) and increase in hjorth complexity; mean of detail coefficients ( ); and minima of coefficients ( , , , and ) were observed after intubation. Significant decrease in hjorth activity; hjorth mobility; total band power; relative alpha band power; specentropy; median and mean frequency; standard deviation and maxima of detail coefficients ( , , and ) and increase in rms value; relative delta band power; mean of coefficients ( and ); and minima of coefficients ( , , and ) were observed due to surgical incision. It can be concluded that different spectral and temporal parameters of EEG signals are highly sensitive to induction, intubation, and surgical incision which are potentially informative for measuring the depth of anaesthesia or efficacy of anaesthetic agents.

Background: Electroencephalography (EEG) is a non-intrusive technique that provides comprehensive insights into the electrical activities of the brain's cerebral cortex. The brain signals obtained from EEGs can be used as a neuropsychological biomarker to detect different stages of Alzheimer's disease (AD) through quantitative EEG (qEEG) analysis. This paper investigates the difference in the abnormalities of resting state EEG (rEEG) signals between eyes-open (EOR) and eyes-closed (ECR) in AD by analyzing 19- scalp electrode EEG signals and making a comparison with healthy controls (HC).

Evaluation of mechanisms of action of EEG neurofeedback (EEG-nf) using simultaneous fMRI is highly desirable to ensure its effective application for clinical rehabilitation and therapy. Counterbalancing training runs with active neurofeedback and sham (neuro)feedback for each participant is a promising approach to demonstrate specificity of training effects to the active neurofeedback. We report the first study in which EEG-nf procedure is both evaluated using simultaneous fMRI and controlled via the counterbalanced active-sham study design.

Chirality, a basic property of symmetry breaking, is crucial for fields such as biology and physics. Recent advances in the study of chiral systems have stimulated interest in the discovery of symmetry-breaking states that enable exotic phenomena such as spontaneous gyrotropic order and superconductivity. Here we examine the interaction between light chirality and electron spins in indium selenide and study the effect of magnetic field on emerging tunnelling photocurrents at the Van Hove singularity.

The brain attends to environmental rhythms by aligning the phase of internal oscillations. However, the factors underlying fluctuations in the strength of this phase entrainment remain largely unknown. In the present study we examined whether the strength of low-frequency EEG phase entrainment to rhythmic stimulus sequences varied with pupil size and posterior alpha-band power, thought to reflect arousal level and excitability of posterior cortical brain areas, respectively.

Introduction: Multitasking during flights leads to a high mental workload, which is detrimental for maintaining task performance. Electroencephalography (EEG) power spectral analysis based on frequency-band oscillations and microstate analysis based on global brain network activation can be used to evaluate mental workload. This study explored the effects of a high mental workload during simulated flight multitasking on EEG frequency-band power and microstate parameters.
