Lethal apnea is a significant cause of acute mortality following a severe traumatic brain injury (TBI). TBI is associated with a surge of adenosine, which also suppresses respiratory function in the brainstem. This study examined the acute and chronic effects of caffeine, an adenosine receptor antagonist, on acute mortality and morbidity after fluid percussion injury. We demonstrate that, regardless of preinjury caffeine exposure, an acute bolus of caffeine given immediately following the injury dosedependently prevented lethal apnea and has no detrimental effects on motor performance following sublethal injuries. Finally, we demonstrate that chronic caffeine treatment after injury, but not caffeine withdrawal, impairs recovery of motor function. Preexposure of the injured brain to caffeine does not have a major impact on acute and delayed outcome parameters; more importantly, a single acute dose of caffeine after the injury can prevent lethal apnea regardless of chronic caffeine preexposure.

Background: Uniparental isodisomy (UPiD) refers to a condition, in which both homologous chromosomes are inherited from only one parental homolog, which can result in either imprinting disorders or autosomal recessive conditions.
Methods: We performed chromosomal microarray analysis, exome sequencing (ES), and RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) using the patient's urine-derived cells on a patient with growth retardation and multiple congenital anomalies.
Results: We identified a homozygous ~0.

: Obstructive sleep apnea is a sleep disorder that is linked to many health complications and can even be lethal in its severe form. Overnight polysomnography is the gold standard for diagnosing apnea, which is expensive, time-consuming, and requires manual analysis by a sleep expert. Artificial intelligence (AI)-embedded wearable device as a portable and less intrusive monitoring system is a highly desired alternative to polysomnography.

Ictal central apnoea is a feature of focal temporal seizures. It is implicated as a risk factor for sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP). Here we study seizure-related apnoeas in two different models of experimental seizures, one chronic and one acute, in adult genetically-unmodified rats, to determine mechanisms of seizure-related apnoeas.

Fatal opioid overdoses in the United States have nearly tripled during the past decade, with greater than 92% involving a synthetic opioid like fentanyl. Fentanyl potently activates the μ-opioid receptor to induce both analgesia and respiratory depression. The danger of illicit fentanyl has recently been exacerbated by adulteration with xylazine, an α2-adrenergic receptor agonist typically used as a veterinary anesthetic.

Unlabelled: Congenital Central Hypoventilation Syndrome (CCHS) is a rare genetic condition affecting the autonomic nervous system and respiratory center due to mutations in the PHOX2B gene, and it is associated with alveolar hypoventilation during sleep and sudden death. It requires early invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV).
Objective: To report a neonatal case successfully treated with non-invasive ventilatory support (NVS), avoiding tracheostomy.
