Cultural Considerations in the Care of Psychiatric Patients: A Case Study on Fright.

J Natl Black Nurses Assoc

Southern Connecticut State University, 501 Crescent Street, Department of Nursing, Jennings Hall Office 121, New Haven, CT 06515.

Published: December 2019

When providing psychiatric care to patients, cultural considerations are necessary to ensure that patients' individual healthcare needs are known and addressed. Failure to incorporate cultural considerations such as food preferences, gender congruency with nursing care, awareness of faith and religious practices, and the use of alternative medicinal and herbal approaches to healthcare treatment, can result in poor treatment engagement and outcomes for patients. The provision of culturally competent health care for psychiatric patients must be patient-centered; with nurses and all healthcare team members collaborating with patients and their families (significant others) in the delivery of safe, high quality, and effective care.

Alzheimers Dement

December 2024

Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry, University of Western Ontario, London, ON, Canada.

Background: The relevance of a plasma membrane Na-Ca exchanger isoform-3 protein, NCX3, is widely evidenced in neuronal physiology. However, the mechanisms leading to NCX3 expression deficits in Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology and its value as a target in AD pharmacological medicine remain incomplete.

Methods: Inhibition and rescue experiments were performed in cultured primary neurons of 5×FAD mice model of AD using pathological Aβ isolated from a conditioned medium of BHK cells, a cell line which does not constitutively express NCX3, stably transfected with a plasmid expressing human wild type Aβ.

Background: Given the high prevalence of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and historic underrepresentation of African Americans and Hispanics in AD clinical trials, there is a critical need to advance understanding of inclusive clinical trial considerations. ENVISION was a confirmatory study designed to validate clinical efficacy of aducanumab, which included specific goals for African American and Hispanic population enrollment in the United States. In our pursuit, we found a 90% screen failure rate among African Americans and Hispanics compared to 75% in non-Hispanic whites.
