RUNX2, a master osteogenic transcript ion factor, is overexpressed in several cancer cells; in melanoma it promotes cells migration and invasion as well as neoangiogenesis. The annual mortality rates related to metastatic melanoma are high and novel agents are needed to improve melanoma patients' survival. It has been shown that lectins specifically target malignant cells since they present the Thomsen-Friedenreich antigen. This disaccharide is hidden in normal cells, while it allows selective lectins binding in transformed cells. Recently, an edible lectin named BEL β-trefoil has been obtained from the wild mushroom . Our previous study showed BEL β-trefoil effects on transcription factor RUNX2 downregulation as well as on the migration ability in melanoma cells treated in vitro. Therefore, to better understand the role of this lectin, we investigated the BEL β-trefoil effects in a zebrafish in vivo model, transplanted with human melanoma cells expressing RUNX2. Our data showed that BEL β-trefoil is able to spread in the tissues and to reduce the formation of metastases in melanoma xenotransplanted zebrafish. In conclusion, BEL β-trefoil can be considered an effective biomolecule to counteract melanoma disease.

Birds are inherently social creatures that rely on pairing to enhance their well-being. Since many bird species lack obvious physical differences between females and males, sex identification is essential for ensuring their welfare. Additionally, early determination of the sexes of birds is crucial for their breeders, especially considering that most companion birds do not display clear sexual characteristics.

Enhanced Image Retrieval Using Multiscale Deep Feature Fusion in Supervised Hashing.

J Imaging

January 2025

RCAM Laboratory, Telecommunications Department, Sidi Bel Abbes University, Sidi Bel Abbes 22000, Algeria.

In recent years, deep-network-based hashing has gained prominence in image retrieval for its ability to generate compact and efficient binary representations. However, most existing methods predominantly focus on high-level semantic features extracted from the final layers of networks, often neglecting structural details that are crucial for capturing spatial relationships within images. Achieving a balance between preserving structural information and maximizing retrieval accuracy is the key to effective image hashing and retrieval.

Background: The wide distribution of phlebotomine vectors complicates the leishmaniasis situation in the world, with the risk of spreading from rural to urban areas. Our study investigates for the first time the ecology and distribution of sand fly populations in leishmaniasis focus (Djelfa, Algeria).

Methods: Sampling is performed using light traps from August 2021 to July 2022 at ten sites with different biotopes: two peri-urban stations (Ain Oussera and Hassi Bahbah), one urban station (Djelfa), and three rural stations (Ain El-Bel, Haniet Ouled Salem and Mlaga).

Subungual melanoma is a variant of acral lentiginous melanoma that arises from the nail matrix. Subungual melanomas present unique clinical challenges due to diagnostic difficulties and the lack of a standardized protocol for surveillance, also, there are no evidence-based studies that determine the ideal frequency and duration of clinical and dermoscopy follow-ups in patients with longitudinal melanonychia. This is highlighted by a case of longitudinal melanonychia in a 53-year-old patient who underwent malignant transformation to subungual melanoma after a biphasic growth.

Given the escalating global energy consumption and the concurrent economic and energy crises, energy-saving behaviour must be adopted on a large scale. Universities that are energy-intensive institutions should be one of the institutions where energy-saving behaviour is widely adopted. Academics devote a substantial portion of their time to their offices, which leads to increased energy usage.
