Nacre-like ceramic composites are of importance in a wide range of applications, because of their mechanical properties, combining high mechanical strength and high fracture toughness. Those mechanical properties are the result of strongly aligned platelets glued in a matrix. Different methods exist to shape such a "brick-and-mortar" hierarchical structure. In this paper, we propose to use the phenomenon of heteroaggregation between silica nanoparticles and large alumina platelets. Experimental and numerical results show that silica nanoparticles can adsorb on alumina platelets with good distribution. This adsorption promotes the deagglomeration of alumina that can self-organize in layers by sedimentation. This phenomenon can be exploited to shape alumina-silica nacre-like composites.

Bentonite is regarded as an adequate buffer material in deep geological repositories and its swelling properties serve to prevent the penetration of groundwater into the repository and to minimize the release of radionuclides. However, bentonite is rarely effective in removing anionic radionuclides due to its permanent negative surface charge. The aim of this study was to enhance the anion removal ability of bentonite by incorporating layered double hydroxides (LDH) with a high anion exchange capacity.

Electronic address:

Hemophilic arthritis (HA) is one of the most pathologically altered joint diseases. Specifically, periodic spontaneous hemorrhage-induced hyperinflammation of the synovium and irreversible destruction of the cartilage are the main mechanisms that profoundly affect the behavioral functioning and quality of life of patients. In this study, we isolated and characterized platelet-rich plasma-derived exosomes (PRP-exo).

Electronic address:

Given the risks of poor patient compliance and bleeding associated with current dual antiplatelet therapies, it is urgent to develop the next generation of cardiovascular stents with anticoagulation and rapid endothelialization capabilities. Inspired by the prominent bioactivity and bioavailability of zeolitic imidazolate framework-90 (ZIF-90) in driving endothelial cell (EC) morphogenesis, this research proposes a "synergistic anticoagulant and endothelial regeneration strategy" depending on mussel-inspired phospholipid copolymer (MIPC) and ZIF-90. Depending on the copolymerization of the catechol with dopamine (Dopa) monomers, Dopa/MIPC coating was immobilized on the surface of CoCr via a one-pot process for resisting the initial thrombosis induced by platelets and fibrinogen.

Effective bleeding management strategies in uncontrollable and noncompressible massive hemorrhage are becoming important in both clinical and combat situations. Here, a novel approach was developed to create a superporous and highly absorbable hemostatic sponge through a facile chemical gas-foaming method by cross-linking long-chain polyphosphate along with nanokaolin and Ca in an alginate structure to synergistically activate the coagulation pathway. Natural kaolin obtained from the Marand mine in East Azarbaijan was converted into pseudohexagonal-shaped kaolin nanoparticles (30 to 150 nm) using ball milling followed by a newly developed glow discharge plasma treatment method.

Key Laboratory of Clay Minerals of Gansu Province, Research Center of Resource Chemistry and Energy Materials, Lanzhou Institute of Chemical Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Lanzhou 730000, PR China. Electronic address:

Clay minerals have attracted wide attention as biomedical materials due to the unique crystal structure, abundant morphology and good biocompatibility. However, the relevant studies on the abundant natural mixed clay deposits were scarcely reported. Herein, the hemostatic performance of natural mixed-dimensional attapulgite clay (MDAPT) composed of one-dimensional attapulgite and multiple two-dimensional clay were systematically investigated based on the structural evolution using oxalic acid for different time.
