To construct a dielectric analog of a spaser, we study several configurations of cluster-based unit cells for an all-dielectric metasurface characterized by resonant conditions of the trapped mode excitation. Excitation of the trapped mode is realized by performing either specific displacement of particles in the cluster or perturbation of the equidistantly spaced particles by off-centered holes. The latter approach is more advantageous for enhancement of the electric near-field with homogeneous distribution in-plane of the structure and strong field localization outside the high-refractive-index dielectric particles. This feature opens prospects for realization of subwavelength flat lasing structures based on strong near-field interaction with substances exhibiting nonlinear characteristics and properties of gain media.

The ability to process auditory information is one of the foundations of the ability to appropriately acquire language. Moreover, early difficulties in basic auditory abilities have cascading effects on the appropriate wiring of brain networks underlying higher-order linguistic processes. Language impairments represent core difficulties in two different but partially overlapping disorders: developmental language disorder (DLD) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

Atomically precise metal cluster-based electrocatalysts have been paid significant attention for an efficient hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Herein, we have synthesized atomically precise Pt(SR) nanoclusters using 3-mercaptopropionic acid (MPA), 6-mercaptohexanoic acid (MHA), 8-mercaptooctanoic acid (MOA), and 11-mercaptoundecanoic acid (MUA) thiol ligands in aqueous media at room temperature to understand the impact of ligand chain length on the HER performance. The composition of Pt(SR) metal clusters was confirmed by matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight (MALDI-TOF) mass spectrometry.

A large number of diseases caused by water pollution have become a global public health issue, and the development and construction of innovative and efficient photocatalytic systems for water remediation is vital to improve water quality and prevent bacteria-induced diseases. Herein, a europium-based metal-organic framework (Eu-MOF) was self-assembled with complex hourglass-shaped Eu clusters as secondary building units (SBUs), achieving excellent photoinduced reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation ability. Moreover, Eu-MOF can quickly and efficiently degrade organic dyes and kill a variety of bacteria under low-power light irradiation conditions.

Article Synopsis
  • Iron-sulfur (Fe-S) clusters are crucial for bacteria to respond to environmental changes and iron scarcity, with two primary biogenesis systems identified: ISC (housekeeping) and SUF (stress response).* -
  • Most bacteria possess only one of these systems, typically SUF, but the human pathogen under study has only ISC, which is essential for its survival and adaptation under various conditions.* -
  • This research highlights the different roles of ISC and SUF in bacterial fitness, revealing that bacteria with only ISC can better withstand oxidative stress and iron deprivation compared to those with only SUF.*

Article Synopsis
  • Heteropolycyclic molecular systems, key in materials and pharmacology, often involve 2D aromatic rings, but this study introduces a new 3D hybrid structure by combining an aromatic boron cluster with a phosphine and a π-conjugated unit.
  • A novel synthetic approach utilizing B-H activation of nido-carboranes with alkynes results in twisted boron cluster-extended phosphoniums, achieving high yields under mild conditions.
  • These new 3D structures show enhanced properties like improved thermal and chemical stability, as well as better photophysical characteristics, highlighting their potential applications in functional materials.
