Reported herein is the immobilization of -(1-naphthyl)ethylenediamine (NED) on cellulose via an epichlorohydrin (ECH)-based covalent attachment and the implementation of the functionalized cellulose into an ultrasensitive, paper-based device for nitrite detection. The reported functionalization procedure resulted in a 12.9-fold higher functionalization density than the density that results from the previously reported procedures, and the subsequent device allows for nitrite detection limits in synthetic freshwater and real seawater of 0.26 and 0.22 μM, respectively. The sensor is efficient in a wide range of temperature, humidity, turbidity, and salinity conditions and has been successfully applied for nitrite detection in real water samples.

Phenolic compounds, such as stilbenes and flavonoids, from spp. exhibit diverse biological activities, including antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and cytotoxicity properties. To this end, the objectives of this study were to establish hairy root cultures of and assess its capacity to produce these bioactive compounds.

Flavones are natural compounds that are broadly distributed in our diet. Their unique properties provide the possibility to control the immune system and the process of inflammation. A high intake of flavonoids, including flavones, may offer protection against reactive oxygen species, inflammation, and chronic diseases.

Nitrite reductases play a crucial role in the nitrogen cycle, demonstrating significant potential for applications in the food industry and environmental remediation, particularly for nitrite degradation and detection. In this study, we identified a novel nitrite reductase (NiR) from a newly isolated denitrifying bacterium, YD01. We constructed a heterologous expression system using BL21/pET28a-Nir, which exhibited remarkable nitrite reductase enzyme activity of 29 U/mL in the culture broth, substantially higher than that reported for other strains.

The g-C3N4/CS biosensor was designed, fabricated, and tested using compounds such as glucose, urine, lactose, and flutamide at a molarity of 10 µM, which could demonstrate a high sensitivity of 200 μm-1 for flutamide. Powerful effective medium theory and FDTD simulation were used to predict the most favorable mode and plasmonic properties of a graphite carbon nitride and chitosan nanocomposite. The research also explores the characteristics of surface plasmon resonance exhibited by the nanocomposite as the chitosan content is adjusted.
