The performance of solution-processed solar cells strongly depends on the geometrical structure and roughness of the photovoltaic layers formed during film drying. During the drying process, the interplay of crystallization and liquid-liquid demixing leads to structure formation on the nano- and microscale and to the final rough film. In order to better understand how the film structure can be improved by process engineering, we aim at theoretically investigating these systems by means of phase-field simulations. We introduce an evaporation model based on the Cahn-Hilliard equation for the evolution of the fluid concentrations coupled to the Allen-Cahn equation for the liquid-vapour phase transformation. We demonstrate its ability to match the experimentally measured drying kinetics and study the impact of the parameters of our model. Furthermore, the evaporation of solvent blends and solvent-vapour annealing are investigated. The dry film roughness emerges naturally from our set of equations, as illustrated through preliminary simulations of spinodal decomposition and film drying on structured substrates.

Hydrologic outputs generated over the Great Lakes with a calibrated version of the GEM-Hydro model.

Sci Data

January 2025

Meteorological Research Division, Environment and Climate Change Canada, Dorval, QC, Canada.

This dataset contains outputs from a calibrated version of the GEM-Hydro model developed at Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) and is available on the Federated Research Data Repository. The dataset covers the basins of the Laurentian Great Lakes and the Ottawa River and extends over the period 2001-2018. The data consist of all variables (hourly fluxes and state variables) related to the water balance of GEM-Hydro's land-surface scheme (including precipitation, surface and sub-surface runoff, drainage, evaporation, snow water equivalent, soil moisture…) and mean daily streamflow at 212 gauge locations.

The current project was designed to develop piperine-loaded solid lipid microparticles (SLMs) to assess the anti-arthritic potential of piperine (PIP). Variable proportions of carnauba wax, beeswax, and tween 80 were employed for preparing SLMs by using the solvent evaporation technique. The developed formulations were subjected to particle size measurements, entrapment efficiency (EE), and zeta potential (ZP) determination.

Amorphous solid dispersions (ASDs) are widely recognized for their potential to enhance the solubility of poorly water-soluble drugs, with factors such as molecular mobility, intermolecular interactions, and storage conditions playing critical roles in their performance. However, the influence of preparation methods on their performance remains underexplored, especially regarding their supersaturation performance. To address this gap, the present study systematically investigates ASDs of ibuprofen (IBU, used as a model drug) prepared using two widely utilized techniques (solvent evaporation, SE, and melt-quench cooling, M-QC).

Ecosystems such as wetlands have karst groundwater as their primary source of preserving their services and functions. Karst systems are complex hydrogeological systems that are difficult to study because of their complicated functioning mechanism, which requires an interdisciplinary effort based on hydrodynamic assessment and characterization of the hydrogeology of the system. The study area is the Ramsar wetland Ciénaga de Tamasopo (Mexico), which is dependent on the discharge of karst groundwater that is affected by water extraction of extensive sugarcane agriculture and is also the main water source for the rural towns.

The impact of the laser wavelength on accuracy in elemental composition analysis in atom probe tomography (APT) was investigated. Three different commercial atom probe systems - LEAP 3000X HR, LEAP 5000 XR, and LEAP 6000 XR - were systematically compared for a TiN model coating studying the effect of shorter laser wavelengths, especially in the deep ultraviolet (DUV) range, on the evaporation behavior. The findings demonstrate that the use of shorter wavelengths enhances the accuracy in elemental composition, while maintaining similar electric field strengths.
