This study aimed at investigating the specific roles of laminarin from seaweed () in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and its potential mechanisms related to senescence marker protein-30 (SMP-30). Human HCC cell lines, including Bel-7404 and HepG2, were incubated with different concentrations of laminarin (0, 5, 15, 25, 35, and 45 mg/mL). The cell viability and apoptosis rates were detected by WST-8 cell proliferation assay and flow cytometry, respectively. Hepa 1-6 tumor-bearing mice were injected with different concentrations of laminarin (400, 800, and 1200 mg/kg·d), and tumor volume and weight were measured. The expression of SMP-30 was detected in laminarin-treated Bel-7404 and HepG2 HCC cells and LO2 normal liver cells by quantitative real-time PCR and Western blotting. The treatment with laminarin (48 h) significantly decreased the viability and increased the apoptosis rates of Bel-7404 and HepG2 cells in a dose-dependent manner. The injection of laminarin also significantly decreased the tumor volumes (beginning on the 10th day) and tumor weights (30 d post-injection) of mice in a dose-dependent manner. In addition, the treatment with laminarin (35 mg/mL for 48 h) significantly upregulated SMP-30 in Bel-7404 and HepG2 cells but not in LO2 cells. Laminarin inhibited the proliferation of Bel-7404 and HepG2 cells and inhibited the growth of tumors in Hepa 1-6 tumor-bearing mice by upregulating SMP-30.

Background: Corosolic acid is a pentacyclic triterpene acid with hypoglycemic, anti-inflammatory, and anti-cancer effects. However, its potential targets in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) are unknown, hindering clinical utilization.

Methods: Differentially expressed proteins of the Bel-7404 cell line were identified with tandem mass tag analysis and differentially expressed genes (DEGs) of an HCC TCGA dataset using bioinformatics.

Ethnopharmacological Relevance: Phyllanthus reticulatus (Euphorbiaceae) is a medicinal plant that has been used in Zhuang medicine since ancient times. Traditionally, it has the effect of removing toxins and detumescence and can be used to treat hepatitis in China and India. Our previous studies have proved that the ethyl acetate extract of its leaves (PRPE) has an anti-hepatoma effect.

Article Synopsis
  • Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a type of liver cancer that's difficult to treat and often comes back after treatment.
  • A study found that a protein called LAGE3 may help doctors understand and predict how HCC behaves.
  • Research showed that LAGE3 is important for how HCC cells grow and spread, suggesting that it could be a target for new treatments.

Article Synopsis
  • Marchantia polymorpha L. is a Chinese herb that might help fight tumors, but we didn't know how it worked until now.
  • In our study, we made an extract from this herb and tested it on liver cancer cells to see if it could stop their growth.
  • The results showed that the extract caused the cancer cells to die by making them change and stopping their growth, as well as boosting the production of harmful substances inside the cells that lead to their destruction.

Background: Phospholysine phosphohistidine inorganic pyrophosphate phosphatase (LHPP) serves as a tumor suppressor in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), but the correlation between the expression of LHPP and the clinical parameters of oncogenic progression is still not well defined. This study is to reveal the correlation between the expression of LHPP in HCC and their clinical parameters.

Methods: Immunohistochemical analysis was used to assess the correlation between the expression of LHPP and the clinical parameters of HCC.
