A visible-light-driven, copper-catalyzed C(sp)-O coupling of benzylic radicals with phenols is described for the first time. This operationally simple and robust process features mild conditions, broad scope, and high functional-group tolerance, enabling the construction of a diverse range of cyanoalkylated aryl ethers (33 examples). Key to this protocol is the dual role of copper salt that acts not only as a photosensitizer but also as a cross-coupling catalyst.

The functionalization of C-H bonds streamlines the synthesis of complex molecules by eliminating the need for substrate preactivation. Traditionally, the Kharasch-Sosnovsky reaction, which directly oxidizes allylic C-H bonds into allylic esters under copper catalysis, has been hampered by long reaction times, limited substrate scope, and low enantioselectivity with acyclic olefins. Herein, we present a novel, visible light-driven, copper-catalyzed asymmetric Kharasch-Sosnovsky reaction that overcomes these challenges.

Visible-light-driven chemical transformation has emerged as a powerful tool for the synthesis of γ-lactams. However, during this transformation, the α-bromoimides need to be pre-prepared. Herein, we report a photoreodox/copper-catalyzed one-pot three-component reaction of alkenes with primary amines for the construction of γ-lactams.

The C(sp)-H functionalization of -pentafluorobenzoyl ketone oximes was implemented under visible light irradiation with copper complexes as catalysts. The reactions involve iminyl-radical-mediated intramolecular hydrogen atom transfer as the key step, with the iminyl radicals being generated via copper-effected N-O cleavage. The reaction afforded 3,4-dihydro-2-pyrroles under the conditions of [Cu(DPEphos)(bcp)]PF and DABCO, while γ-pentafluorobenzoyloxy ketones were produced predominantly when [Cu(dpp)]PF and InCl·4HO were used as catalysts.

Nitrogen-centered radicals (NCRs) are a versatile class of highly reactive species that have a longer history than the classical carbon-based radicals in synthetic chemistry. Depending on the N-hybridization and substitution patterns, NCRs can serve as electrophiles or nucleophiles to undergo various radical transformations. Despite their power, progress in nitrogen-radical chemistry is still slow compared with the popularity of carbon radicals, and their considerable synthetic potential has been largely underexplored, which is, as concluded by Zard, mainly hampered by "a dearth of convenient access to these species and a lack of awareness pertaining to their reactivity".
