Background/purpose: The enhancement pattern in the hepatic arterial phase (HAP) of dynamic computed tomography (CT) is reportedly a prognostic marker in patients with intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (IHCC). This study was performed to clarify the significance of central hypo-enhancement in the HAP in patients with mass-forming IHCC.

Methods: Forty patients who had undergone initial surgical resection for mass-forming IHCC were enrolled. The dynamic CT was scanned 40 s after contrast agent injection as the HAP. A radiologist classified the patients into three groups based on the vascular pattern: the hyper-enhancement group (Hyper group), rim-enhancement group (Rim group), and hypo-enhancement group (Hypo group). The surgical specimens were immunohistochemically stained for hypoxia-inducible factor 1 (HIF-1). The correlation with clinicopathological findings and HIF-1 expression was investigated.

Results: The Hyper, Rim, and Hypo groups comprised 8, 7, and 25 patients, respectively. There were no significant correlations between the groups and clinicopathological factors. Overall survival (OS) was significantly worse in the Hypo than in the Hyper group (p = 0.03). OS was also significantly worse in the Rim + Hypo group (i.e., hypo-enhancement in the central tumor) than in the Hyper group (p = 0.04). Furthermore, inclusion in the Rim + Hypo group was a prognostic factor for OS (hazard ratio 6.68). High HIF-1 expression in the central part of the tumor was correlated with central hypo-enhancement (Hyper group: 25% and Rim + Hypo group: 72%).

Conclusions: Central hypo-enhancement was a prognostic factor in patients with IHCC. The high malignant potential of tumors with central hypo-enhancement might be associated with HIF-1 upregulation.

Sonographic characteristics of thyroid nodules with a Halo.

Thyroid Res

October 2024

Department of Ultrasound Diagnosis, The Second Xiangya Hospital, Central South University, Changsha, Hunan, 410011, China.

Article Synopsis
  • The study looked at thyroid nodules that had a special outer layer called a halo and tried to find out how to tell if they are dangerous or not using special ultrasound tests.
  • They checked the results of different methods, including one that uses contrast (like a dye) and another that takes a tiny sample of cells, to see which worked best.
  • The results showed that benign (not harmful) nodules usually have a thin, smooth halo, while harmful ones have a thicker, rough halo, which helps doctors decide what to do next.

Aims: Hepatic epithelioid hemangioendothelioma (HEHE) is a rare vascular tumor that primarily affects the liver. This study aimed to analyze the characteristics of conventional ultrasound (US) and contrast-enhanced ultrasonography (CEUS) in HEHE.

Material And Methods: This multi-center case series study enrolled patients diagnosed with HEHE from five hospitals in China between August 2004 and October 2022.

Background: Tracheal adenoid cystic carcinoma (TACC) is a rare, low-grade malignant tumor. The primary TACC usually metastasizes to the lung and bone, rarely involving the thyroid. Although some previous reports have described the imaging features of TACC with thyroid invasion, the multimodal ultrasound findings of TACC with thyroid invasion and mimicking thyroid tumors have not been reported before.

Tissue characterization of acute lesions during cardiac magnetic resonance-guided ablation of cavo-tricuspid isthmus-dependent atrial flutter: a feasibility study.

Aims: To characterize acute lesions during cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR)-guided radiofrequency (RF) ablation of cavo-tricuspid isthmus (CTI)-dependent atrial flutter by combining T2-weighted imaging (T2WI), T1 mapping, first-pass perfusion, and late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) imaging. CMR-guided catheter ablation offers a unique opportunity to investigate acute ablation lesions. Until present, studies only used T2WI and LGE CMR to assess acute lesions.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the diagnostic efficacy of contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) and dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCE-MRI) combined with tumor markers alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) and des-γ-carboxyl prothrombin (DCP) for primary hepatic carcinoma (PHC). A total of 70 patients with PHC (PHC group), 42 patients with liver cyst (benign liver disease group (BLDG)) and 30 healthy people (healthy group (HG)) were selected as the research objects. CEUS and DCE-MRI were performed by American GE Vivid E9 color Doppler ultrasound system and Siemens 1.
