Common buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum Moench; 2n = 2x = 16) is an annual crop that is cultivated widely around the world and contains an abundance of nutrients and bioactive compounds. However, the yield of buckwheat is low compared to that of other major crops, and it contains proteins that cause allergic reactions in some people. Much research has aimed to improve or eliminate these undesirable traits, and some major advances have recently been made. Here, we review recent advances in buckwheat breeding materials, tools, and methods, including the development of self-compatible lines, genetic maps, a buckwheat genome database, and an efficient breeding strategy. We also describe emerging breeding methods for high-value lines.

Microalgae offer a compelling platform for the production of commodity products, due to their superior photosynthetic efficiency, adaptability to nonarable lands and nonpotable water, and their capacity to produce a versatile array of bioproducts, including biofuels and biomaterials. However, the scalability of microalgae as a bioresource has been hindered by challenges such as costly biomass production related to vulnerability to pond crashes during large-scale cultivation. Understanding the movements of highly mobile animals is challenging because of the many factors they must consider in their decision-making. Many seabirds, for example, are adapted to use winds to travel long distances at low energetic cost but also potentially benefit from targeting specific foraging hotspots. To investigate how an animal makes foraging decisions, given the inevitable trade-off between these factors, we tracked over 600 foraging trips of breeding Manx shearwaters (Puffinus puffinus; N = 218 individuals) using GPS accelerometers.

A convenient method is proposed using a heat-treatable volatile template to prepare hierarchical porous biochar (HPB). Litsea cubeba leaves and ZIF-8 served as carbon source and volatile hard template, respectively. The good compatibility between ZIF-8 and biomass facilitated their uniform dispersion, and the thermal decomposition of ZIF-8 created abundant pores in the HPB.
