Tandem solar cells involving metal-halide perovskite subcells offer routes to power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) that exceed the single-junction limit; however, reported PCE values for tandems have so far lain below their potential due to inefficient photon harvesting. Here we increase the optical path length in perovskite films by preserving smooth morphology while increasing thickness using a method we term boosted solvent extraction. Carrier collection in these films - as made - is limited by an insufficient electron diffusion length; however, we further find that adding a Lewis base reduces the trap density and enhances the electron-diffusion length to 2.3 µm, enabling a 19% PCE for 1.63 eV semi-transparent perovskite cells having an average near-infrared transmittance of 85%. The perovskite top cell combined with solution-processed colloidal quantum dot:organic hybrid bottom cell leads to a PCE of 24%; while coupling the perovskite cell with a silicon bottom cell yields a PCE of 28.2%.

Automatic Optical Path Alignment Method for Optical Biological Microscope.

Sensors (Basel)

December 2024

Guangxi Key Laboratory of Machine Vision and Intelligent Control, Wuzhou University, Wuzhou 543000, China.

A high-quality optical path alignment is essential for achieving superior image quality in optical biological microscope (OBM) systems. The traditional automatic alignment methods for OBMs rely heavily on complex masker-detection techniques. This paper introduces an innovative, image-sensor-based optical path alignment approach designed for low-power objective (specifically 4×) automatic OBMs.

Low-color-temperature candlelight organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) offer a healthier lighting alternative by minimizing blue light exposure, which is known to disrupt circadian rhythms, suppress melatonin, and potentially harm the retina with prolonged use. In this study, we explore the integration of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), specifically molybdenum disulfide (MoS) and tungsten disulfide (WS), into the hole injection layers (HILs) of OLEDs to enhance their performance. The TMDs, which are known for their superior carrier mobility, optical properties, and 2D layered structure, were doped at levels of 0%, 5%, 10%, and 15% in PEDOT:PSS-based HILs.

Resolving Artifacts and Improving the Detection Limit in Circular Differential Scattering Measurement of Chiral and Achiral Gold Nanorods.

ACS Nano

January 2025

Jiangsu Key Laboratory of Frontier Material Physics and Devices, School of Physical Science and Technology, Soochow University, Suzhou, Jiangsu 215006, China.

Circular differential scattering (CDS) spectroscopy has been developed as a powerful method for the characterization of the optical activity of individual plasmonic nanostructures and their complexes with chiral molecules. However, standard measurement setups often result in artifacts that have long raised concerns on the interpretation of spectral data. In fact, the detection limit of CDS setups is constrained by the high level of artifacts, to ±10%.

Fiber Optic Micro-Hole Salinity Sensor Based on Femtosecond Laser Processing.

Nanomaterials (Basel)

January 2025

School of Artificial Intelligence, Optics and Electronics (iOPEN), Northwestern Polytechnical University, Xi'an 710072, China.

This study presents a novel reflective fiber Fabry-Perot (F-P) salinity sensor. The sensor employs a femtosecond laser to fabricate an open liquid cavity, facilitating the unobstructed ingress and egress of the liquid, thereby enabling the direct involvement of the liquid in light transmission. Variations in the refractive index of the liquid induce corresponding changes in the effective refractive index of the optical path, which subsequently influences the output spectrum.

Quantum walks on photonic platforms represent a physics-rich framework for quantum measurements, simulations and universal computing. Dynamic reconfigurability of photonic circuitry is key to controlling the walk and retrieving its full operation potential. Universal quantum processing schemes based on time-bin encoding in gated fibre loops have been proposed but not demonstrated yet, mainly due to gate inefficiencies.
