Balance simplices of 3-species May-Leonard systems.

We investigate the existence of a two-dimensional invariant manifold that attracts all nonzero orbits in 3 species Lotka-Volterra systems with identical linear growth rates. This manifold, which we call the is the common boundary of the basin of repulsion of the origin and the basin of repulsion of infinity. The balance simplex is linked to ecological models where there is 'growth when rare' and competition for finite resources. By including alternative food sources for predators we cater for predator-prey type models. In the case that the model is competitive, the balance simplex coincides with the carrying simplex which is an unordered manifold (no two points may be ordered componentwise), but for non-competitive models the balance simplex need not be unordered. The balance simplex of our models contains all limit sets and is the graph of a piecewise analytic function over the unit probability simplex.

Teff is a gluten-free cereal with valuable nutritional composition, making it a potential target for fraud. Therefore, the food industry and consumers require rapid fraud detection methods like spectroscopy. Thus, the performance of NIR in detecting and quantifying teff flours adulterated with other cereals was evaluated; the NIR spectra were also used to predict the proximal composition.

SESN1 negatively regulates STING1 to maintain innate immune homeostasis.

State Key Laboratory of Natural Medicines, School of Life Science and Technology, China Pharmaceutical University, Nanjing, China.

STING1 is a central hub protein of CGAS-STING1 signaling which is important signaling axis to sense DNA for the host against pathogens infection through regulating type I interferon (IFN-I) production. However, excessive STING1 activation-induced overproduced IFN-I triggers tissue damage and autoimmune disorders. Thus, the activity of STING1 must be precisely regulated for immune homeostasis.

For decades, Alzheimer's Disease (AD) research has focused on the amyloid cascade hypothesis, which identifies amyloid-beta (Aβ) as the primary driver of the disease. However, the consistent failure of Aβ-targeted therapies to demonstrate efficacy, coupled with significant safety concerns, underscores the need to rethink our approach to AD treatment. Emerging evidence points to microbial infections as environmental factors in AD pathoetiology.

Background and objective Viral infections caused by cytomegalovirus, lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus, varicella-zoster virus, herpes simplex type 1 and type 2, rubella, measles, rubeola, HIV, West Nile virus, Lassa virus, and mumps are known to be associated with hearing loss. There have been reports of inner ear involvement in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients but the extent and variations in cochlear involvement of symptomatic and asymptomatic patients has not been adequately described. This study aimed to evaluate the hearing status among symptomatic and asymptomatic COVID-19 patients to address the prospects for routine screening for hearing loss in COVID-19 patients.

The aim of this study was to use blue whiting fish protein hydrolysate (BWFPH) as a novel dietary amino acid supplement in whey protein isolate (WPI) and pea protein isolate (PPI)-based protein bars. The findings indicate that incorporating BWFPH significantly influenced the nutritional profile of the protein bars, leading to a ~93% reduction in hardness compared to bars without the hydrolysate. Additionally, BWFPH effectively delayed the hardening process during storage.
