Article Abstract

The changing technological environment is reflected in regular updates made to the everyday technology (ET) use questionnaire (ETUQ). Newly added ETs may not present comparable challenges across countries and diagnoses. To identify whether country context, or dementia diagnosis, impact ETs' challenge level. 315 older adults from three countries were included; Sweden ( = 73), United States ( = 114), England ( = 128), and had a confirmed diagnosis of mild dementia ( = 99) or no known cognitive impairment ( = 216). Differential Items Functioning (DIF) analysis was performed on 88 ETs included in the ETUQ by country and diagnosis. The impact of DIF was evaluated in a Differential Test Functioning (DTF) analysis. Nine items (10.2%) in the ETUQ showed statistically significant DIF between countries; five of which were public space ETs and none of which were information and communication technologies (ICTs). Three ICT items, and no others, showed significant DIF by diagnosis. The items' DIF was shown to have no impact upon person measures of ability to use ET in the DTF. The utility of the ETUQ in occupational therapy practice and research internationally is highlighted through the stability of the challenge hierarchy and lack of impact on person measures.

Patients in need of a kidney transplant have the option of receiving a kidney from a living donor or a deceased donor. Patients in the United States who do not have an available living donor typically wait on the deceased donor waiting list for an average of three to five years, although some patients may wait longer. The waiting list is very complex and intended to allocate kidneys in a fair and equitable manner.

Mechanisms of Homoarginine: Looking Beyond Clinical Outcomes.

Acta Physiol (Oxf)

February 2025

Department of Biological Sciences, University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

Purpose: Homoarginine (hArg) is an arginine metabolite that has been known for years, but its physiological role in the body remains poorly understood. For instance, it is well known that high hArg concentrations in the blood are protective against several disease states, yet the mechanisms behind these health benefits are unclear. This review compiles what is known about hArg, namely its synthetic pathways, its role in different diseases and conditions, and its proposed mechanisms of action in humans and experimental animals.

Precise Synthesis of Complex Si-Si Molecular Frameworks.

J Am Chem Soc

January 2025

Department of Chemistry, Johns Hopkins University, 3400 N. Charles St., Baltimore, Maryland 21218, United States.

In this Perspective, we highlight the emergence of target-oriented syntheses of complex molecules composed of Si-Si (oligosilanes) rather than C-C bonds. Saturated oligosilanes structurally resemble alkanes with respect to a tetrahedral geometry, a preference for a staggered conformation in linear chains, the ability to form stable small rings, and tetrahedral stereochemistry at asymmetrically functionalized Si centers. There are also critical differences, for example, differences in multiple bonding and the ability to form penta- and hexacoordinated structures, that mean that chemical reactivity and, in particular, rules for stereoselective synthesis do not cleanly translate from carbon to silicon.

Most traditional optical biosensors operate through molecular recognition, where ligand binding causes conformational changes that lead to optical perturbations in the emitting motif. Optical sensors developed from single-stranded DNA-functionalized single-walled carbon nanotubes (ssDNA-SWCNTs) have started to make useful contributions to biological research. However, the mechanisms underlying their function have remained poorly understood.

Objectives: This report describes changes in total, early, and late fetal mortality between 2022 and 2023 (provisional), as well as fetal mortality by maternal race and Hispanic origin and state of residence. Comparisons are made with findings from 2021 to 2022.

Methods: Data are based on reports of fetal death filed in the 50 states and the District of Columbia and collected via the National Vital Statistics System.
