Fossilized plant-insect herbivore associations provide fundamental information about the assembly of terrestrial communities through geologic time. However, fossil evidence of associations originating in deep time and persisting to the modern day is scarce. We studied the insect herbivore damage found on 284 Eucalyptus frenguelliana leaves from the early Eocene Laguna del Hunco rainforest locality in Argentinean Patagonia and compared damage patterns with those observed on extant, rainforest-associated Eucalyptus species from Australasia (> 10 000 herbarium sheets reviewed).

Background: Preterm birth (PTB) is associated with adverse short- and long-term health. There are known racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic inequities in PTB. Because of historical de jure and modern-day de facto segregation and neighborhood divestment, neighborhoods are a source of structural racism and disenfranchisement and a potential target for policies and interventions to reduce PTB inequity.

ConspectusCentral to the quest of understanding the emergence of life is to uncover the role of metals, particularly iron, in shaping prebiotic chemistry. Iron, as the most abundant of the accessible transition metals on the prebiotic Earth, played a pivotal role in early biochemical processes and continues to be indispensable to modern biology. Here, we discuss our recent contributions to probing the plausibility of prebiotic complexes with iron, including heme and iron-sulfur clusters, in mediating chemistry beneficial to a protocell.

Phytochemicals-rich food-based botanicals including traditional or under-utilized plant-based ingredients can serve a dual functional role to help counter food contamination of bacterial origin, while also addressing the rise of diet-linked non-communicable chronic diseases (NCDs) such as type 2 diabetes, chronic hypertension and the associated oxidative stress. Hence the screening of these food-based botanicals for their phenolic content and profile, as well as antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-hyperglycemic and anti-hypertensive properties has relevant merit. Using in vitro assay models, hot water extracts of different forms (slice, pickle, or powder) of amla (Phyllanthus emblica), clove (Syzygium aromaticum), kokum (Garcinia indica), and garlic (Allium sativum) were analyzed for their total soluble phenolic content (TSP) and phenolic profile as well as antimicrobial activity against strains of Salmonella Enteritidis, Listeria monocytogenes, and Escherichia coli that are associated with food-borne disease outbreaks.

Beyond well-documented bioarcheological and genetic effects, whether these changes also had molecular-level epigenetic repercussions in past human populations has been an open question. In fact, methylation signatures can be inferred from UDG-treated ancient DNA through postmortem damage patterns, but with low signal-to-noise ratios; it is thus unclear whether published paleogenomes would provide the necessary resolution to discover systematic effects of lifestyle and diet shifts.
