Five molecular complexes with different non-noble metal centers were synthesized. The Co-based complex displays the highest photocatalytic performance for CO to CO conversion in aqueous media. It achieves high activity (TON = 41 017 and TOF = 3.80 s) and selectivity (87%) for the production of CO.

Chromophores incorporated into rigid polymer matrices may exhibit novel photophysical properties distinct from those in liquid solutions. In this work, we explored the decay path of the second ππ* state (2ππ*) of riboflavin in poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) solutions and films with various acidities. Highly efficient internal conversion from 2ππ* to the lowest ππ* state (1ππ*) induced by slight in-plane motion is demonstrated in all PVA solutions and films, irrespective of environmental acidity and rigidification.

Depolymerizing plastic waste through hydrogen-based processes, such as hydrogenolysis and hydrocracking, presents a promising solution for converting plastics into liquid fuels. However, conventional hydrogen production methods rely heavily on fossil fuels, exacerbating global warming. This study introduces a novel approach to plastic waste hydrogenolysis that utilizes in situ hydrogen generated via the aqueous phase reforming (APR) of methanol, a biomass-derived chemical offering a more sustainable alternative.

Biofuels derived from renewable and sustainable lignocellulosic biomass, such as switchgrass, offer a promising means to limit greenhouse gas emissions. However, switchgrass grown under drought conditions contains high levels of chemical compounds that inhibit microbial conversion to biofuels. Fermentation of drought switchgrass hydrolysates by engineered and generates less ethanol than fermentation of hydrolyzed switchgrass from an average rainfall year.

This work reports the step-wise fabrication of a core-shell plasmonic nanocomposite Pd@BTL-Cd consisting of a BTL-Cd shell and a palladium nanoparticle core. BTL-Cd is the [Cd(BTL)·CdCl] complex where the heptadentate framework of the bis-compartmental ligand encapsulated two Cd(II) centres in separate pockets. Pd@BTL-Cd has been found to be highly efficient for the photocatalytic conversion of furfural (a biomass-derived aldehyde) to furfuryl amine reductive amination in aqueous ammonia at room temperature.
