The -C-H bond formylation of arenes has been achieved using CHBr as a formyl source in the presence of [Ru(-cym)(OAc)] as a catalyst. This method provides efficient access to the preparation of various -substituted aromatic compounds, such as alcohols, ethers, amines, nitriles, alkenes, halogens, carboxylic acids, and their derivatives, through transformation of the versatile formyl group. Furthermore, mechanistic studies show that the key active species is a pentagonal ruthenacycle complex.

A variety of α-arylated sulfoxonium ylides could be facilely synthesized in modest to high yields through α-arylation of sulfoxonium ylides with aryl fluorosulfates C-O bond functionalization under palladium catalysis. Reactions using readily available and bench-stable aryl fluorosulfates as effective and appealing arylating agents showed both good substrate scope and broad functionality tolerance. Important functional groups such as nitro, cyano, formyl, acetyl, methoxycarbonyl, trifluoromethoxy, fluoro, and chloro embedded in substrates remained intact during the course of the reaction, and could be subjected to downstream modification.

Polyaromatics, as the assembly of diverse cyclic π-systems, exhibit unique physicochemical properties when compared to their individual constituents. In this study, we developed a strategic connection of two azacycles via a furan bridge through a defluorinative diazolation-cyclization reaction of trifluoromethyl enones and N-heterocycles. A range of modular 2,4-furan-bridged triheterocycles (FBTHs), featuring a C3-trifluoromethyl group, was synthesized with broad substrate scope and good regioselectivity under transition metal-free conditions.

Photosystem I (PSI) from utilizes chlorophyll (Chl) with a formyl group as its primary pigment, which is more red-shifted than chlorophyll (Chl) in PSI from . Using the cryo-electron microscopy structure and solving the linear Poisson-Boltzmann equation, here we report the redox potential () values in PSI. The (Chl) values at the paired chlorophyll site, [PP], are nearly identical to the corresponding (Chl) values in PSI, despite Chl having a 200 mV lower reduction power.

Initiation factors play critical roles in fine-tuning translation initiation, which is the first and the rate-limiting step in protein synthesis. In bacteria, initiation factors, IF1, IF2 and IF3 work in concert to accurately position the initiator tRNA (i-tRNA) in its formyl-aminoacyl form, and the mRNA start codon at the ribosomal P-site, setting the stage for accommodation of the aminoacyl-tRNA in response to the second codon, and formation of the first peptide bond. Among these, IF3 is particularly crucial in ensuring the fidelity of translation initiation as it is involved in the accuracy of the selection of i-tRNA and the start codon.
