Background: Hyperbilirubinemia and hypoalbuminemia are frequently appeared and associated with poor prognosis in critically ill patients. We aim to evaluate the association between the bilirubin to albumin ratio and prognosis in intensive care unit (ICU) patients.

Methods: This was a retrospective study of 731 patients who were admitted to the medical intensive care unit (MICU) at a tertiary-care center from July 2015 to September 2017. We analyzed the bilirubin to albumin ratio on admission to the MICU, including clinical characteristics and other examinations.

Results: The overall 28-day survival of MICU patients was 69.1%. On univariate analysis, Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation (APACHE) II score (P<0.001), Sequential Organ Failure Assessment score (P<0.001), Simplified Acute Physiology Score II score (P<0.001), Creactive protein (P=0.015), and bilirubin/albumin ratio (P<0.001) were associated with mortality of ICU patients. The receiver operating characteristic curves for ICU patients mortality between bilirubin to albumin ratio and APACHE II score were not statistically significant (P=0.282). On multivariate analysis, higher APACHE II score (hazard ratio [HR], 1.05; 95% CI, 1.03 to 1.06; P<0.001) and bilirubin to albumin ratio (HR, 1.65; 95% CI, 1.23 to 2.20; P=0.001) were independently related to the ICU patient mortality.

Conclusions: A higher bilirubin to albumin ratio was related to the unfavorable prognosis and mortality in critically ill patients.

Prediction Model of the T Cell-mediated Rejection After Liver Transplantation in Children and Adults: a Case-controlled Study.

Int J Surg

January 2025

Department of Liver Transplant Center, Organ Transplant Center, West China Hospital/West China School of Medicine, Sichuan University, Chengdu, P.R, China.

Objective: T cell-mediated rejection (TCMR) is a major concern following liver transplantation (LT), and identifying its predictors could help improve post-transplant prognosis. This study aimed to develop a model to predict the risk of TCMR in children and adults after LT.

Method: Pre-transplant demographic characteristics, intraoperative parameters, and especially early post-transplant laboratory data for 1,221 LT recipients (1,096 adults and 125 children) were obtained from Hospital, University, between 1 January 2015, and 1 January 2022.

Prediction of posthepatectomy liver failure in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma through ultrasound elastography.

World J Gastroenterol

January 2025

Department of Radiology, Zhejiang Provincial People's Hospital (Affiliated People's Hospital, Hangzhou Medical College), Hangzhou 310014, Zhejiang Province, China.

In this article, we comment on the article by Cheng published in recently. Posthepatectomy liver failure (PHLF) remains a leading cause of hepatectomy-related mortality and can be evaluated according to liver reserve function. Liver stiffness (LS) measured by ultrasonic elastography and spleen area demonstrate a strong correlation with hepatic proliferation, fibrosis, and portal vein congestion, thus indirectly reflecting liver reserve function.

Purpose: The research intended to present prospective data on the long-term prognosis of individuals with hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection who received direct-acting antiviral agent (DAA) treatment.

Patients And Methods: Patients who received DAA treatment at Tianjin Third Central Hospital and Tianjin Second People's Hospital were prospectively enrolled and subsequently underwent a longitudinal follow-up. This research monitored occurrences of virological relapse, hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), mortality, and liver disease progression.

Aim: This study aims to create and validate a novel systematic immune-inflammation-nutrition (SIIN) score to provide a non-invasive and accurate prognostic tool for head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) patients.

Methods: 259 participants diagnosed with HNSCC from the First Affiliated Hospital of Xi'an Jiaotong University between 2008 and 2017 was included in this retrospective study. Patients were assigned to training (n=181) and validation (n=78) sets.

Background: The diagnostic criteria of neonatal intrahepatic cholestasis caused by citrin deficiency (NICCD) have not been established due to non-specific clinical manifestations, and our understanding on the treatment outcome is still limited. We aim to investigate the biochemical characteristics, genetic variants, and treatment outcome of NICCD patients.

Methods: We compared the nutritional status and biochemical characteristics of 55 NICCD infants and 27 idiopathic neonatal cholestasis (INC) infants.
