Dark photons, as a minimal extension of the Standard Model through an additional Abelian gauge group, may propagate relativistically across the galaxy, originating from dark matter decay or annihilation, thereby contributing to a galactic dark photon background. The generation of dark photons typically favors certain polarization modes, which are dependent on the interactions between dark matter and dark photons. We introduce a framework in which a resonant cavity is utilized to detect and differentiate these polarizations, leveraging the daily variation in expected signals due to the anisotropic distribution of dark photons and the rotation of the Earth.

Attaining sub-Kelvin temperatures remains technologically challenging and often relies on the scarce resource He, unless employing adiabatic demagnetization refrigeration. Herein, the active coolant typically consists of weakly coupled paramagnetic ions, whose magnetic interaction strengths are comparable in energy to the relevant temperature regime of cooling. Such interactions depend strongly on inter-ion distances, fundamentally hindering the realization of dense coolants for sub-Kelvin refrigeration.

Small molecule inhibits KCNQ channels with a non-blocking mechanism.

Voltage-gated ion channels (VGICs) are crucial targets for neuropsychiatric therapeutics owing to their role in controlling neuronal excitability and the established link between their dysfunction and neurological diseases, highlighting the importance of identifying modulators with distinct mechanisms. Here we report two small-molecule modulators with the same chemical scaffold, Ebio2 and Ebio3, targeting a potassium channel KCNQ2, with opposite effects: Ebio2 acts as a potent activator, whereas Ebio3 serves as a potent and selective inhibitor. Guided by cryogenic electron microscopy, patch-clamp recordings and molecular dynamics simulations, we reveal that Ebio3 attaches to the outside of the inner gate, employing a unique non-blocking inhibitory mechanism that directly squeezes the S6 pore helix to inactivate the KCNQ2 channel.

Efficient separation of hydrogen isotopes, especially deuterium (D), is pivotal for advancing industries such as nuclear fusion, semiconductor processing, and metabolic imaging. Current technologies, including cryogenic distillation and Girdler sulfide processes, suffer from significant limitations in selectivity and cost-effectiveness. Herein, we introduce a novel approach utilizing an imidazolium-based Metal-Organic Framework (MOF), JCM-1, designed to enhance D/H separation through temperature-dependent gate-opening controlled by ion exchange.

Potassium (K)-based batteries hold great promise for cryogenic applications owing to the small Stokes radius and weak Lewis acidity of K. Nevertheless, energy-dense (>200 W h kg) K batteries under subzero conditions have seldom been reported. Here, an over 400 W h kg K battery is realized at -40 °C via an anode-free and dual-ion strategy, surpassing these state-of-the-art K batteries and even most Li/Na batteries at low temperatures (LTs).
