cleanroom strains are often exposed to sub-inhibitory concentrations of disinfectants, including didecyldimethylammonium chloride (DDAC). Consequently, they can adapt or even become tolerant to them. RNA-sequencing was used to investigate adaptation and tolerance mechanisms of cleanroom strains (SE11, SE18), with SE11Ad adapted and SE18To tolerant to DDAC. Adaptation to DDAC was identified with up-regulation of genes mainly involved in transport (thioredoxin reductase [], the arsenic efflux pump [gene ID, SE0334], sugar phosphate antiporter []), while down-regulation was seen for the Agr system (, , , , SE1543), for enhanced biofilm formation. Tolerance to DDAC revealed the up-regulation of genes associated with transporters (L-cysteine transport []; uracil permease [SE0875]; multidrug transporter []; arsenic efflux pump []); the down-regulation of genes involved in amino-acid biosynthesis (lysine []; histidine []; methionine []), and an enzyme involved in peptidoglycan, and therefore cell wall modifications (alanine racemase [SE1079]). We show for the first time the differentially expressed genes in DDAC-adapted and DDAC-tolerant strains, which highlight the complexity of the responses through the involvement of different mechanisms.

Coral reefs worldwide are threatened by increasing ocean temperatures because of the sensitivity of the coral-algal symbiosis to thermal stress. Reef-building corals form symbiotic relationships with dinoflagellates (family Symbiodiniaceae), including those species which acquire their initial symbiont complement predominately from their parents. Changes in the composition of symbiont communities, through the mechanisms of symbiont shuffling or switching, can modulate the host's thermal limits.

As one of the grave environmental hazards, soil salinization seriously limits crop productivity, growth, and development. When plants are exposed to salt stress, they suffer a sequence of damage mainly caused by osmotic stress, ion toxicity, and subsequently oxidative stress. As sessile organisms, plants have developed many physiological and biochemical strategies to mitigate the impact of salt stress.

Personality can be considered a system characterized by complex dynamics that are extremely adaptive depending on continuous interactions with the environment and situations. The present preliminary study explores the dynamic interplay between brain flexibility and personality by taking the dynamic approach to personality into account, thereby drawing from Cloninger's psychobiological model. 46 healthy individuals were recruited, and their brain dynamics were assessed using magnetoencephalography (MEG) during the resting state.

Since its proposal 70 years ago, great strides were made to build the framework regarding persistence, including defining triggered, spontaneous and antibiotic-induced persisters. However, challenges remain in characterizing the molecular determinants underlying the phenotypic switch into persistence3.

Species interactions can contribute to species turnover when the outcomes of the interactions are context dependent (e.g., change along environmental gradients).
