The basilisk of the pseudo-Paracelsian is the evil twin of the homunculus. Created from menstrual blood by artificial ectogenesis in an alchemical laboratory, the basilisk embodies the poisonous character traditionally ascribed to catamenial women, but magnified and concentrated by its mode of generation to the degree that it can kill by its glance alone. How does this remarkable thought experiment relate to other instances of the basilisk in the genuine and pseudonymous corpus of Paracelsus? The present paper outlines two primary uses which emerge repeatedly: first, in works other than the basilisk is used by Paracelsus and his imitators as a means of explaining action at a distance, especially in the case of plague. Relying on a medieval association between the basilisk's deadly gaze and the putative ability of menstruating women to damage mirrors, the genuine Paracelsus links contagious disease to the deleterious action of the female imagination. Second, because the basilisk was traditionally held to be the product of an unnatural birth, being born from an egg laid by a rooster and incubated by a toad, the Paracelsian corpus frequently invokes the monster as a model for unnatural generation in general.

Haplotyped-resolved phased assemblies aim to capture the full allelic diversity in heterozygous and polyploid species to enable accurate genetic analyses. However, building non-collapsed references still presents a challenge. Here, we used long-range interaction Hi-C reads (high-throughput chromatin conformation capture) and HiFi PacBio reads to assemble the genome of the apomictic cultivar Basilisks from Urochloa decumbens (2n = 4x = 36), an outcrossed tetraploid Paniceae grass widely cropped to feed livestock in the tropics.

Extensional flows of complex fluids play an important role in many industrial applications, such as spraying and atomisation, as well as microfluidic-based drop deposition. The dripping-on-substrate (DoS) technique is a conceptually-simple, but dynamically-complex, probe of the extensional rheology of low-viscosity, non-Newtonian fluids. It incorporates the capillary-driven thinning of a liquid bridge, produced by a single drop as it is slowly dispensed from a syringe pump onto a solid partially-wetting substrate.

Traditional spacecraft attitude control often relies heavily on the dimension and mass information of the spacecraft. In active debris removal scenarios, these characteristics cannot be known beforehand because the debris can take any shape or mass. Additionally, it is not possible to measure the mass of the combined system of satellite and debris object in orbit.

Legged robots have received widespread attention in academia and engineering owing to their excellent terrain adaptability. However, most legged robots can only adapt to high-hardness environments instead of flexible environments. Expanding the motion range of legged robots to water is a promising but challenging work.

Drought has become more recurrent and causes a substantial decline in forage yields leading to strain on feed resources for livestock production. This has intensified the search for drought-tolerant forages to promote sustainable livestock production. The objective of this study was to identify drought-tolerant grasses and to discern their morpho-physiological and yield traits to water stress as well as the relationship between these traits and indices of drought resistance.
