Aim: TTo assess the effects of preoperative calcium levels and parathyroidectomy on estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) in patients of primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) with mild renal dysfunction or normal renal function.

Methods: This retrospective study enrolled 71 patients who underwent parathyroidectomy for PHPT in the General Surgery Department at Ondokuz Mayis University Hospital from 2010 to 2018. All patients were histopathologically diagnosed with parathyroid adenoma. Total serum calcium, serum creatinine, serum intact parathyroid hormone (PTH), and serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 (25(OH)D3) were measured before and 3-6 months after surgery. Patients were assigned to the low eGFR group (60-90 mL/min/1.73 m2) or normal eGFR group (≥90 mL/min/1.73 m2) and to the low calcium group (≤11.2 mg/dL) or high calcium group (>11.2 mg/dL).

Results: In the low eGFR and high calcium group, there were significantly more patients with hypertension and older age. In the normal eGFR and high calcium group, eGFR was significantly reduced after surgery. Independent predictors of eGFR change after surgery were age, pre- parathyroidectomy calcium, and pre-parathyroidectomy eGFR.

Conclusions: After surgery, patients with low eGFR had preserved renal function, whereas those with normal eGFR had decreased renal function. Mild renal dysfunction in PHPT was associated with older age, hypertension, and high calcium levels.

Exploring the Internal Environmental Changes of Muscle Cells and Apoptotic Phase of Mitochondria in Dry-Cured Loin Using Electrical Stimulation: Promoting the Precise Regulation of Loin Ham Quality.

Traditional dry-curing methods have a long cycle time and low efficiency, resulting in the inconsistent quality of dry-cured ham. By applying electrical stimulation (ES) technology in the dry-curing process, it was found that ES affected mitochondrial apoptosis by modulating the intracellular environment of muscle cells, which, in turn, enhanced the quality of dry-cured pork loin. Specifically, ES accelerated glycogen and ATP depletion, which led to a rapid decline in pH.

Purpose: This study aims to investigate whether zinc ion (Zn) alleviates myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury (MIRI) through the MAM-associated signaling pathway and to explore its impact on ERS and calcium overload.

Methods: H9C2 cells were cultured in a DMEM supplemented with 10 % fetal bovine serum and 1 % antibiotic solution. A MIRI model was established through simulated ischemia and reoxygenation with Zn treatment in a complete medium.

Targeted organelle therapy is a promising therapeutic method for significantly regulating the tumor microenvironment, yet it often lacks effective strategies for leveraging synergistic enhancement effect. Engineered small extracellular vesicles (sEVs) are expected to address this challenge due to their notable advantages in drug delivery, extended circulation time, and intercellular information transmission. Herein, we prepare sEVs with pH and photothermal dual-responsiveness, which are encapsulated with hydrogels for a quadruple-efficient synergistic therapy.

Zebrafish models of genetic epilepsy benefit from the ability to assess disease-relevant knock-out alleles with numerous tools, including genetically encoded calcium indicators (GECIs) and hypopigmentation alleles to improve visualization. However, there may be unintended effects of these manipulations on the phenotypes under investigation. There is also debate regarding the use of stable loss-of-function (LoF) alleles in zebrafish, due to genetic compensation (GC).
