Stannylation of calcium carbide followed by Sn-hypervalent iodine(III) exchange reaction cleanly afforded the electrophilic ethynylating agent ethynyl(phenyl)-λ-iodane in high yield. This two-step method uses very inexpensive materials and is readily operable without any special precautions.
