AI Article Synopsis

  • A Gram-positive cocci normally found in the oral cavity and gastrointestinal tract can cause purulent abscesses in immunocompromised patients, but this case involves an immunocompetent 21-year-old.
  • The patient developed septic shock due to multiple pyogenic liver abscesses, which were confirmed by positive blood cultures.
  • Treatment included ultrasound-guided drainage of the abscesses and antibiotics, leading to resolution of the condition after the patient had a dental cleaning three months prior to admission.

Article Abstract

is a Gram-positive cocci, normally found in the oral cavity and gastrointestinal tract. It has been associated with deep-seated purulent abscesses commonly in the brain or liver in immunocompromised patients. Here, we discuss the case of a 21-year-old immunocompetent patient that presented with septic shock in the setting of multiple pyogenic liver abscesses with positive blood cultures for The patient had a dental cleaning 3 months prior to admission. The abscesses resolved with ultrasound guided drainage and antibiotic therapy.

Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease Increases the Risk of Lung Abscess: Findings from a Nationwide Cohort Study.

J Clin Med

January 2025

Division of Allergy and Pulmonology, Department of Internal Medicine, Chungnam National University Sejong Hospital, Sejong-si 30099, Republic of Korea.

This study aimed to investigate the association between nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), assessed by the Fatty Liver Index (FLI), and the occurrence of lung abscess within a large population-based cohort. We conducted a nationwide retrospective study using data from 367,930 subjects who underwent National Health check-ups between 2009 and 2018. Cox proportional hazards regression was performed to evaluate the association between the FLI and the incidence of lung abscess and community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) after adjusting for age, sex, and relevant covariates.

Pyogenic liver abscesses (PLAs) are serious infections in which doctors often fail in identifying the causative agent due to microbiological limitations. These limitations in detecting uncommon pathogens complicate the treatment and recovery. Molecular techniques, like massive sequencing, enable the detection of uncommon pathogens and highlight the shortcomings of traditional cultures.

The patients with Arthrogryposis-Renal dysfunction-Cholestasis (ARC) syndrome have genetic susceptibility to the opportunistic infections due to the involvement of VPS33B (vacuolar protein sorting 33 homolog B) in phagolysosome fusion in macrophages. Detailed pathologic studies in ARC patients are missing in literature due to the lack of autopsy. We described the first autopsy case of ARC syndrome in a 2-month-old male infant.

Primary cholangiocarcinoma is a rare bile duct epithelial neoplasm that can present with atypical clinical manifestations, complicating its diagnosis. A 62-year-old male showed symptoms suggestive of a complicated hepatic cyst that was later identified as intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma. The patient presented with abdominal discomfort without fever.

Hepatic tuberculosis, typically associated with miliary tuberculosis, can occasionally present as localized liver lesions. This case report describes a 77-year-old male presenting with persistent abdominal pain and fever, following an endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography for bile duct sludge removal. Subsequent computed tomography revealed focal liver lesions.
