: Various prefabricated maxillofacial implants are used in the clinical routine for the surgical treatment of patients. In addition to these prefabricated implants, customized CAD/CAM implants become increasingly important for a more precise replacement of damaged anatomical structures. This paper reviews the design and manufacturing of patient-specific implants for the maxillofacial area.: The contribution of this publication is to give a state-of-the-art overview in the usage of customized facial implants. Moreover, it provides future perspectives, including 3D printing technologies, for the manufacturing of patient-individual facial implants that are based on patient's data acquisitions, like Computed Tomography (CT) or Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI).: The main target of this review is to present various designing software and 3D manufacturing technologies that have been applied to fabricate facial implants. In doing so, different CAD designing software's are discussed, which are based on various methods and have been implemented and evaluated by researchers. Finally, recent 3D printing technologies that have been applied to manufacture patient-individual implants will be introduced and discussed.

Purpose: Cochlear implants (CI) are the most successful bioprosthesis in medicine probably due to the tonotopic anatomy of the auditory pathway and of course the brain plasticity. Correct placement of the CI arrays, respecting the inner ear anatomy are therefore important. The ideal trajectory to insert a cochlear implant array is defined by an entrance through the round window membrane and continues as long as possible parallel to the basal turn of the cochlea.

Background: Mandibular angle osteotomy (MAO) is a popular procedure to improve facial aesthetics, however, over-resection of the mandibular angle can lead to both functional and aesthetic challenges. Precision is essential in restoring these over-resected mandibles to achieve balanced outcomes. Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) implants offer biocompatibility, durability, and customization potential, making them valuable for achieving precise and predictable results.

Background: Pediatric cochlear implant (CI) recipients with cochlear malformations face challenges due to variable speech recognition outcomes.

Aims/objectives: This study assesses the predictive value of intraoperative electrically evoked compound action potential (eCAP) thresholds, residual hearing, age at implantation, Intelligent Quotient (IQ), and malformation type for speech recognition outcomes.

Material And Methods: A prospective cohort of 52 children (aged 1-4 years) with cochlear malformations who underwent CI between 2016 and 2024 was analyzed.

An implantable system for opioid safety.

Division of Gastroenterology, Department of Medicine, Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Cambridge, MA 02139, USA.

Naloxone can effectively rescue victims from opioid overdose, but less than 5% survive due to delayed or absent first responder intervention. Current overdose reversal systems face key limitations, including low user adherence, false positive detection, and slow antidote delivery. Here, we describe a subcutaneously implanted robotic first responder to overcome these challenges.
