This work aims to compare the ultrasonic inspection of 9%Ni steel joints welded with the Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) process and Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) process. These are the two most widely used processes used to weld pipes for CO injection units for floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) in the Brazilian oil and gas industry. The SMAW equipment is simple and portable, which is convenient for the FPSO; however, the GMAW process has the advantage of welding with high productivity. In this study we performed a numerical simulation using the software CIVA, 11th version, to analyze the behavior of ultrasonic longitudinal wave beams through GMAW and SMAW dissimilar weld joints. Ultrasonic tests were performed on calibration blocks drawn from both welded joints to evaluate the simulation results. The results are discussed with regard to the microstructure of the weld metal via electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) analyses. The SMAW process presented better inspection performance than the GMAW process in terms of attenuation and dispersion effects. Although the SMAW had a better outcome, for both processes the configuration of 16 active elements and a scanning angle of 48° resulted in an optimized inspection of the entire joint.

In this study, the relationships between the values of the parameters included in heat input (welding current, arc voltage and welding speed) and their effects on the size of the cross-sectional areas of welds in joints made of ferritic-austenitic stainless steel using the GMAW method were determined. An attempt was also made to determine to what extent it will be possible to predict the properties of fabricated welded joints using the functional relationship describing the effect of the value of heat input on the size of the cross-sectional area of welds. The analysis of the developed mathematical models shows their suitability for explaining (and predicting) the sizes of the cross-sectional areas of welded joints depending on the values of the input parameters of the welding process.

Narrow-gap arc welding is an efficient method that significantly enhances industrial production efficiency and reduces costs. This study investigates the application of low-alloy steel wire EG70-G in narrow-gap gas metal arc welding (GMAW) on thick plates. Experimental observations were made to examine the arc behavior, droplet transition behavior, and weld formation characteristics of double-wire welding under various process parameters.

The petroleum industry is essential for supplying crude oil, which is vital for fuel and chemicals and drives substantial investments in technologies, especially in regard to increasing the durability of the drill strings used in wellbore construction. This study aims to establish and to validate a hardbanding technology for reconditioning NC50 tool joints subjected to wear, thereby increasing drill pipe durability and reducing the risk of failure during drilling, which can lead to ecological pollution, human safety issues, and financial costs. The hardbanding of the tool joints was carried out using the gas metal arc welding process (GMAW) with two different wear-resistant wires, ARNCO 100XT and FLUXOFIL M58.

The nitrogen bubble bursting phenomenon during the welding process of high nitrogen steel (HNS) can lead to unstable droplet transfer and welding process, reducing the quality of weld formation. In this study, a novel approach, ultrasonic-assisted gas metal arc welding (U-GMAW), is proposed to suppress the escape of nitrogen gas during droplet transfer. This study investigates the influence of ultrasound on the metal transfer process during two distinct metal transfer modes: short-circuiting and droplet transfer.

Article Synopsis
  • Welding is essential for metal joining in the fabrication industry, and this study examined the impact of two filler materials (ER70S-6 and ER308LSi) using various wire feeder speeds (WFS) and shielding gas flow rates (GFR) on weld quality of ASTM A516 G70 plates.
  • The research found that the best results in tensile strength and hardness came from specific combinations of WFS and GFR depending on the filler material used, with ER308LSi performing better overall.
  • Additionally, the study highlighted how microstructural changes in welded joints influence mechanical properties, with finer grain structures in the heat-affected zone contributing to improved hardness and strength.
