The objective of this article is to review strategies to reduce the use of gadolinium-based contrast agents for pediatric abdominal MRI. Alternative contrast agents that do not contain gadolinium and unenhanced pediatric abdominal MRI protocols have shown clinical utility. Sequences such as DWI and new multicontrast MRI pulse sequences offer promise for tissue characterization without IV contrast agents. Patients requiring repeat MRI to evaluate for change in focal disease can be monitored with unenhanced abdominal MRI.

The aim of this study was to investigate the differences between nosocomial and community microorganisms isolated from patients with UTI by determining their bacterial profile, antibiotic resistance and ability to produce biofilms. A retrospective study, based on bacterial isolates from consecutive urine samples collected between January 2019 and December 2023, was conducted at a university hospital. The main pathogens isolated from both community and hospital samples were the same, but their frequency of isolation differed.

The integrity of esophageal epithelial cells in patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or GERD-like symptoms is the first mechanism of protection to decrease the sensitivity to gastric reflux and heartburn symptoms. We investigated the protective effects of Poliprotect (PPRO), a CE-marked medical device, on esophageal epithelial integrity using in vitro and ex vivo models. In vitro, the protective effects of PPRO were tested on Caco-2 cells.

Sentinel lymph node (SLN) detection has been widely investigated in recent years as a part of the surgical staging of women with endometrial cancer (EC), gradually overtaking lymphadenectomy (LND) in this respect. In this study, thirty EC patients, assumed as stage I, were investigated using superparamagnetic iron oxide (SPIO) as a tracer for SLN detection followed by LND. The endpoints of this research were the proportion of successful SLN detection, the average number of SLNs per patient, the percentage of bilaterally detected SLNs, and the proportion of metastatic SLNs.

Reducing the use of antibiotics in animal husbandry is essential to limit the spread of resistance. A promising alternative to antibiotics resides in bacteriocins, which are antimicrobial peptides produced by bacteria showing a great diversity in terms of spectrum of activity, structure, and mechanism of action. In this study, the effects of diverse bacteriocins on the composition and metabolic activity of chicken cecal microbiota were examined in vitro, in comparison with antibiotics.
