This article explores the rise of comics-based research (CBR) as an innovative method for disseminating and translating academic findings to broader audiences. Rooted in the established use of comics in technical communication, CBR takes the unique strengths of graphic media-accessibility, multimodal engagement, and visual storytelling-to communicate complex concepts to diverse audiences, particularly in health-related disciplines. A recent development in this field is the comic research abstract, a concise, visually enriched alternative to traditional textual abstracts.

A proof-of-concept study for precise mapping of pigmented basal cell carcinoma in asian skin using multispectral optoacoustic tomography imaging with level set segmentation.

Eur J Nucl Med Mol Imaging

January 2025

A*STAR Skin Research Labs (A*SRL), Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR), 31 Biopolis Way, #07-01, Nanos, Singapore, 138669, Republic of Singapore.

Purpose: Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC), the most common subtype of non-melanoma skin cancers (NMSC), is prevalent worldwide and poses significant challenges due to their increasing incidence and complex treatment considerations. Existing clinical approaches, such as Mohs micrographic surgery, are time-consuming and labour-intensive, requiring meticulous layer-by-layer excision and examination, which can significantly extend the duration of the procedure. Current optical imaging solutions also lack the necessary spatial resolution, penetration depth, and contrast for effective clinical use.

Beta-tricalcium phosphate patient-specific gap implants in bilateral sagittal split osteotomy: an innovative treatment method to enhance the mandibular border contour. Part 1: concept and workflow.

Int J Oral Maxillofac Surg

January 2025

Division of Maxillofacial Surgery, Department of Surgery, AZ Sint-Jan Brugge AV, Bruges, Belgium; Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Unit, Division of Surgery, Barzilai Medical Center, Affiliated to Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, Ashkelon, Israel.

Antegonial notching can occur after bilateral sagittal split osteotomy (BSSO) and may lead to unpleasant aesthetic outcomes in both young and older patients. This clinical study presents a new concept to potentially overcome this problem and describes the workflow. Beta-tricalcium phosphate patient-specific gap implants (β-TCP gap-PSIs) are biocompatible and resorbable bone grafts that are placed in the space of the osteotomy gap during orthognathic procedures; they are virtually planned and printed in 3D.

J Clin Epidemiol

January 2025

Division of Nephrology and Hypertension, Department of Internal Medicine, University of Kansas Medical Centre, 3901 Rainbow Blvd, MS3002, Kansas City, KS, USA. Electronic address:

Objective: We aimed to determine whether the existing risk of bias assessment tools addressed constructs other than risk of bias or internal validity, and whether they used numerical scores to express quality, which is discouraged and may be a misleading approach.

Methods: We searched Ovid MEDLINE and Embase to identify quality appraisal tools across all disciplines in human health research. Tools designed specifically to evaluate reporting quality were excluded.
