Alginate has been a material of choice for a spectrum of applications, ranging from metal adsorption to wound dressing. Electrospinning has added a new dimension to polymeric materials, including alginate, which can be processed to their nanosize levels in order to afford unique nanostructured materials with fascinating properties. The resulting nanostructured materials often feature high porosity, stability, permeability, and a large surface-to-volume ratio. In the present review, recent trends on electrospun alginate nanofibers from over the past 10 years toward advanced applications are discussed. The application of electrospun alginate nanofibers in various fields such as bioremediation, scaffolds for skin tissue engineering, drug delivery, and sensors are also elucidated.

Bacterial infections can lead to severe complications that adversely affect wound healing. Thus, the development of effective wound dressings has become a major focus in the biomedical field, as current solutions remain insufficient for treating complex, particularly chronic wounds. Designing an optimal environment for healing and tissue regeneration is essential.

Osteochondral (OC) tissue plays a crucial role due to its ability to connect bone and cartilage tissues. To address the complexity of structure and functionality at the bone-cartilage interface, relevant to the presence of the tidemark as a critical element at the bone-cartilage boundary, we fabricated graded scaffolds through sequential 3D printing. The scaffold's bottom layer was based on a gelatin/oxidized alginate mixture enriched with hydroxyapatite (HAp) to create a rougher surface and larger pores to promote osteogenesis.

An asymmetric wound dressing introduced, inspired by the skin structure made of chitosan and alginate hydrogel as the bottom layer and electrospun PCL-silk sericin (PCL-SS) as the top layer. In addition, an anti-inflammatory, bactericidal and immunomodulatory substance, 10-hydroxydecanoic acid (10-HDA), known as queen bee acid, was loaded in inner layer. The wound dressing was thoroughly characterized and confirmed to meet the criteria of a standard wound dressing through in vitro and in vivo studies.

Flexible nanofiber sensors have gained substantial attention in extending application scenarios owing to their desirable lightweight, comfort, and breathability. Nevertheless, disorder and uneven dimension issues of nanofibers are the leading concerns in their multifunctional response, which often leads to erratic response signals as well as poor linearity. In this work, a high-performance oriented nanofiber film with a three-dimensional network consisting of alginate sodium, poly(vinyl alcohol), and poly(ethylene oxide) was successfully fabricated by a controllable directional electrospinning technique.

Biocompatible and biodegradable nerve growth conduits (NGCs) provide a promising alternative to conventional nerve grafting for peripheral nerve regeneration. Incorporating nanoclay (NC) has been shown to increase the hydrophilicity and flexibility of polymeric scaffolds. In the present study, poly caprolactone-alginate (PCL-ALG) conduits with varying percentages of NC (0.
